Re: Romania, 25 July 2011

I'm glad you have such a good attitude Ariel! I'm excited to see you in a few weeks! I talked with Grandma Lola today too, and she said she wants to see you. I love the Disneyland picture you have. :) You should come spend a few days in Vernal when you have time.

Querida familia,

First of all, you need to here the most important news... Yesterday we had an arm wrestling contest with a bunch of members after lunch, and I destroyed everyone. The only person that was difficult was Elder Wright. I am the ARM WRESTLING CHAMPION OF THE WARD.

Now we can move on to the other stuff.

Thanks to everyone who sent e-mails, they were really good today, everyone is getting spiritual.

This week was really good. We managed to bring 17 people to church on Sunday and in total there were 162 people. They want to divide the ward and pretty soon they will get there.

It is starting to get even hotter here because winter is ending, in Guarabira last summer I always arrived in our apartment at the end of the with my shirt completely soaked, even the sleeves, and I think it will start to happen again. I am trying to think of a story or something to write, but nothing is coming to mind. I have a question for Mom, Dad, and Tim. What team did you guys cheer for when you were in Brazil, my team is the Corinthians.

Here is a story, if you remember there is a Freira here that isn't letting the students from her school go to church, I already talked to her once for two hours, but couldn't resolve anything, this week I had a dream with her and I was chewing her out. I had pointy finger in the air and she was backed against the wall and I was rebuking her. It was a good dream.

One thing that I have been able to see during my mission is that there is lots and lots of opposition to the work of God. It seems like every other religion tries to get in the way, but even with the opposition the work goes forward. It will continue forever and we just have to choose if we want to go with it. This really is the work of God and we are really blessed to have our entire family together in the church.

Gotta go,
Elder Tom Jay

Romania, 25 July 2011

Buna familia,

How's it going?  We have had some problems in the branch recently.  There are a couple of members that hate the Relief Society president, but I think she's cool.  We worked with her on doing visiting teaching and the only problem is that she wants to do all of the visiting teaching herself to make sure that it gets done.  We are still working on it.  She got really frustrated on Sunday though when hardly anyone came to Relief Society, and then when she was walking home she saw one of the members that hates her on the street and they had a discussion and the member said that she's going to stay inactive and wouldn't accept Sora Miron's apology.  Sora Miron said she wants to leave the country now.  (I think she is doubly stressed out because her sewing business isn't going well because nobody has money to get things fixed so she has hardly any food to eat and she doesn't have enough money to buy bus tickets so she walked four and a half hours to get to church.)  She wants to go work in a different country for a while so that she can earn money to live, and escape from her calling.  The problems come from everyone seeing themself as the victim of little situations that don't even matter.  If somebody would just be the mature one and let things go, or apologize without being lame and condescending about it, things would be fine.

When we were contacting in the park this week we met an American.  We started talking to him in Romanian and he had just a small accent (a kind of accent that somebody can get just from speaking in English a lot like some of the member girls here) and then he started to get a big grin on his face.  Then he said with a perfect American accent, "You can talk in English if it's easier."  He is here with the peace corp.  There is a girl in the Mihai Bravu ward in Bucharest that is with the peace corp too and he knows her.  He seemed really nice and open, but he lives in a small village outside the city so we can't meet with him.  It's cool to see that there are some people (outside of our church) who do things like go and help out in a foreign country for a couple of years.  They'll get blessings.

Some lady got really mad at us for saying "Buna ziua" to her on the street in front of the church.  She started yelling things at us and it made my companion really sad.  I lived in Iasi before this so it didn't phase me, but she went and sat in the church for a while to recover.  The elders were there, so I stayed outside and talked to more people... I guess she was in sight but not within sound when the doors were closed.  Probably shouldn't do that, but I just didn't know how to help her.  The next day in church the lesson in Relief Society was about missionary work and we read the verses where it talks about being honored to suffer and be persecuted for Christ's sake.  I pointed it out to my companion.  I think she has been having a rough week though.  We have lost pretty much all of our investigators to one cause or another.  I have been having a good week though.  I just feel good, even though everything doesn't go as planned.

The elders gave me a blessing last transfer and in it they told me remember that God is very aware of everything that is going on in my life, and it has helped me, and my entire mission has helped me, to trust that God knows what he's doing.  I was thinking about how easy it would be for him to put the people in our path that are prepared and will progress; I know that they are here, it's just they aren't put in our path.  We haven't been doing anything wrong either.  I think it's just the plan.  Maybe because the branch isn't ready or something, but it's just interesting to think about.  It doesn't make me discouraged though, it'll all turn out the way it's supposed to.

I started getting a little bit depressed last transfer that I would be at home and have a normal boring life, so I decided to put some pictures of you guys on my new planner to remind me how good it will be.  I try not to think a lot about being home because I still want to focus on missionary work, but I think of about one thing every day that will be awesome.  My favorite picture on the planner is a picture of a bunch of blond-haired, blue-eyed nieces and nephews standing in front of a castle in Disneyland.  It's just super different from anything here.  People love to look at it.

Today we went for P-day to a place called "Adventure Park" where we went on all sorts of ropes courses up in the trees in the forest.  It was fun, and I think it's kind of like a playground for adults.  There were a lot of little kids there too for summer camps and we had to wait forever for them sometimes.  Some of them were from different countries, and didn't speak English or Romanian.  If I knew English and German I probably could have been able to communicate with anyone.  I made it fine through all the courses until the end of the hardest course where you had to pull yourself up a zipline.  My arms gave out with about fifteen feet to go and I slid back to the start.  I had to back track a bit and find an exit because I couldn't make it.  The elders were behind me and neither of them even tried.  Afterward I told one of the supervisors below that you have to have strong arms to make it and he said "it depends" and then walked away.  I think there was some trick to it that he didn't tell me even though he could see me struggling to pull myself to the end.  My companion didn't want to do it so she took pictures of us instead, so I should have some pretty good ones.

That's it for now.  I actually didn't have as much time as usual, but I think I wrote more than usual.

Love,
Sora Jay

TRUST.

From: Mrs. Theresa John.
Email: theresajohn4@gmail.com

Dear: Sir / Madam,

I am the above named person from Liberia. I am married to Mr. Cletus John who worked with Liberian embassy in Lome-Togo for nine years before he died in the year 2000.We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days.

Before his death we were both born again Christian. Since his death I decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home, which the Bible is against. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of USD $21.3 (Twenty One Million Three Hundred Thousand united states dollars) with one Security Company in Europe. Presently, this money is still with the Security Company. Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next six months due to cancer problem. The one that disturbs me most is my stroke sickness. Having known my condition I decided to keep this fund in Europe.

I want an organization or an individual that will use this fund for orphanages, widows, propagating the word of God and to endeavor that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that Blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want my husbands efforts to be used by unbelievers.

I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly way. This is why I am taking this decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace. I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health hence the presence of my husband's relatives around me always. I don't want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible.

As soon as I receive your reply I shall inform the security company in Europe that you are the beneficiary of the said consignment you will need to go and claim this fund in Europe. I will also issue you an authority letter that will prove you the present beneficiary of this fund. I want you and the organization to always pray for me because the lord is my shepherd. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life.

Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing another person for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I stated herein. If you want to talk by phone, you can call my lawyer friend on telephone number +447045746948; his name is Barrister Jimmy Cole, Email: ( bar.jimmycole@gmail.com ). Hoping you reply to him and Remain blessed in the Lord send to me your telephone and fax number and contact details so that my lawyer can also contact you.

Yours in Christ,

Mrs. Theresa JohnPLEASE OPEN ATTACHED LETTER.

Querida Familia,

I don't remember much from this week. I think I'm getting old and developing alzimers and shaky hand syndrome.

Do you remember the guy that found the Book of Mormon in the garbage? We have been trying to get him to stop smoking and breaking the Law of Chastity so he can be baptized, but until now we haven't been successful. If you guys want to, you can pray for him. He has a testimony, wants to be baptized, wants to leave all of his addictions and bad habits behind, but the problem is his friends don't want him to, and the evangelical people would rather have him smoking and drinking than going to church with us. I already tried to mark a baptismal date with him a couple of times, but we didn't succeed until this week. We were in his house and Elder Wright was saying a prayer and during the prayer 2nd Nephi 4 came to my mind, so we read it with him. The spirit was there really strong and afterward Diôgo said that he wanted to mark a date this month for him to prepare to be baptized so we marked the 24th. I hadn't even thought of reading 2 Nephi 4 with him and it has been a while since I read that chapter, but during the prayer the thought came to my mind "2 Nephi chapter 4" and I  thought "hey, thats a good idea, thanks." God knows his children better than we do and if we search for inspiration and then follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost, we will see miracles happen.

This week we had interviews with President Hall, normally my interviews with him are really good, but this time it seemed like he was mad at me or something and started to lecture about dilligence and faith, told me I have to be a "Full-time missionary", and the "Missionary that my mom thinks I am". He talked really good about Mom though, he said that she had been a really good missionary and praised her for having a big family and told me I need to be like Mom. At first I got a little annoyed because I know for a fact that I am more dilligent and obedient than almost all of the missionaries here, but then I thought a little bit, and I can definitely be better with the Area Book, talking to more people in the street, teaching shorter lessons sometimes, language study, writing in my journal, and cleaning the house. It is a little dirty... just a little.

Times up!
Elder Tom Jay

Romania 18 July 2011

Hey everybody,

We have been working on getting visiting teaching functioning here.
When you are working witht the wards you have to have patience that
lasts for weeks, but eventually it gets somewhere. We have been
telling the Relief Society president that we want to help get visiting
teaching going since the transfer started and now we have set up to
meet with her tomorrow to get things going.

Yesterday at church was kind of crazy. We got there really early
because we wanted to talk to the Relief Society president and she is
usually early, but she actually wasn't yesterday. The good thing was
that we got there and opened the doors before anyone else got there
because the elders called us at about nine o'clock and said that the
branch president wasn't coming, (and one of his counselors is in
Greece, and the other one is inactive) so they said they would be a
little late and they were trying to find out if someone from the
district presidency would be there to conduct. The branch president
asked the elders to conduct, but they didn't know if that was okay.
Luckily, even though he was supposed to be in a different brach that
day, someone from the district presidency was there and he conducted
and spoke. I think somebody got sick and that's why he was still in
our branch today. Church went pretty well though. I wish that I had
to deal with the problems that Tom has. Some people in our branch
have kids but they don't bring them to church; they find somebody to
babysit them and leave them at home.

One of our investigators, and older guy named Ifrim, is really
attached to the missionaries and I have been trying to make him be not
so attached, so on Saturday he called us and said that he wasn't going
to come to church the next day because we don't care about meeting
with him. He said if we're only going to meet once a week we might as
well not meet at all. Sora Bedebone was really upset, and I think she
was really mad at me for having tried to distance ourselves from him
(even though we were still definitely meeting with him more than once
a week and talking to him on the phone at least every other day). The
next day she told me that he is way too attached to us though. We
will have to get him coming for the right reasons, not just because of
us. He has a girlfriend that he hasn't been spending time with
because we told him he needs to keep the law of chastity and he said,
"I haven't been spending time with Doina because of you guys, but you
guys haven't even been making time to meet with me, so now I have no
one." I guess he wants us to take the place of his girlfriend in his
life. We told him a million times that he doesn't have to break up
with her, he just has to keep the law of chastity. And he knows that
the missionaries come and go but he said that he will be okay with any
of them. We have been trying to get members to come to the lessons
with us for the past couple weeks but it hasn't ever worked out. We
will probably meet with him once more and then let him go for a little
while, or try to get the elders to work with him.

We were teaching English class on Tuesday and we hadn't planned very
well what the spiritual thought was going to be so we decided to talk
about the apostasy (because we're good at it) so we planned a
scripture beforehand and just winged it. Our spiritual thoughts
usually go really well and you can feel the spirit and see that the
students can feel the spirit. As I was starting I told them that I
wasn't really sure what to talk about that day, I was holding a bible
in my hand and one of them said "Just flip open your bible and that's
what you should share." I held up my bible and let it fall open (sort
of planning on getting close to the verses we had planned in 2 Thes 2)
and I had forgotten that I shoved a scripture marker in there when we
had planned right before class so it actually opened up exactly to the
verses that we planned on sharing. So I read the verses and went
right into it. A lot of the members of the class seemed awe-struck,
and then we again felt the spirit really strong as we talked about the
apostasy, and you could see it on the student's faces. The spiritual
thoughts from this transfer are probably the best ones I have had my
whole mission because we have just been teaching them to be good and
making them want to find out more instead of just teaching them the
first lessons in little bits. There is a group of older women that
all come together and their leader completely agreed with everything
we said about the apostasy. I was able to give some good insights too
because I just finished reading about it in Jesus the Christ. Maybe
if we can get her the others will follow. It would probably triple
the size of the relief society.

We met with one of our English students at his clinic this week. He
is an optometrist. He has come to church a couple of times now and he
really likes it and really admires what we do. He said he can meet
again this week too.

Well, my time is up.
For all of those who don't know my departure date is the 31st of
August (Mom said a lot of people have been asking). So I'll probably
be back some time after that. And I'll be in this city until the end
of my mission.

Love,
Sora Jay

Querida família,

Friday we baptized a man named Eliézio and a 16-year-old named Rafael. Both of them are really good. Eliézio had been going to church and talking with the missionaries for six months when I got and already knew everything, he just needed a little push. I can see him being a future bishop, but we need to baptize his wife and daughter first. Rafael already wants to be a missionary, but will have to wait three years.

This ward has tons of young people and little kids. On Sunday there were 42 kids in primary, 40 young-men, and 20 something young-women and to keep things revernent during sacrament meeting we all split up to sit with the noisier kids I sat on a bench surrouned by rowdy young boys, but with some threatening, pressure points and countless shushes, we had a pretty reverent. It was almost reverent, during the sacrament a little girl got her arm stuck in one of the him book holders and a guy busted the wood to get her arm out.

Saturday we were talking with a guy and a lady came up and started talking to us and asked if it was our church that donates wheel-chairs. I told her that it was and she told me that her sister has a son that can't walk, so we finished talking to the man and went to this lady´s sister´s house. Does that make sense? Anyway, we taught them about the Plan of Salvation, why we have difficulties, and about the ressurection and invited them to church. The husband wasn't home when we taught them but the next morning they went to church and we are going to teach them again tomorrow.

Gotta go,
Elder Jay Brazil

11 July 2011, Romania

Buna,

Sounds like some crazy things happened this week.  I think Sally lives in too dangerous a place.  It wasn't a super good week for me either, though.

We went out to a mini Zone Conference in Arad on Tuesday to meet the new president and his wife.  They are super cool, and super smart people (plus they're noobs so they listen carefully to everything the experienced missionaries say).  It was probably the most positive Zone Conference I have ever had because of the President and his wife.  I'm sad that I won't be able to be here to see how things go.  It was cool to go back to Arad, it was my first city and I was last there about a year ago.  I still knew my way around the city, except for the tramvai lines because they changed.  I was able to get a delicious vanilla croissant from the bakery by my old apartment, and they have introduced a new item, the caramel croissant, which is almost just as good.  It was kind of depressing to go there though, and exhausting.  We had to take a night train and get there at five in the morning and then start getting ready for the conference because there were six girls in the apartment so we had to start getting ready early.  I slept a little bit before we left but I was still super tired.  After Zone Conference we had to wait until midnight to catch our train back to Brasov so we went contacting in Arad.  All the people there are super nice.  That's what was depressing.  Back when I was in Arad I didn't know how good I had it.  People here aren't quite as nice, nor have I been in any area where people are that nice since then.  I have also gotten a little tired of my companion this week.

We made some headway with that Pentecostal family we've been teaching, Family Nitsu.  We had had only contentious lessons recently where they tried to show us a bunch of verses in the Bible and fight with us.  We never fought back, and we always tried to bring back the subject to what we had planned but it never worked.  But, when we met with them last I told them that they weren't listening (at least the dad).  He said that he was listening and then asked a question and I said "I already answered that question like five times, obviously you weren't listening, see."  Sora Bedebone said it was kind of scary when I raised my voice at them and told them to listen.  When they tried to read more verses from the Bible I told them we already knew what was in there and wouldn't let them share it (because they just wanted to be contentious).  It went on like this for a little while and we told them again that they had to pray to find out the truth.  I told the dad that it took all the self control I had to keep from showing him all the things I knew in the Bible because I knew that it wouldn't help him know the truthfulness of our message anyway; he would just try to explain it away the was he had done with the few verses that I had shared.  Finally the dad got a little smile on his face and said "I have an idea, you guys pray to know if there is something special about our family and our beliefs, and we will pray to know if Joseph Smith was a real prophet."  I felt okay saying "da" and right after I said it the evil spirit of contention left the room and we were able to finish nicely.  The son, Oni, asked in the closing prayer to know if Joseph Smith was a prophet.  (They told me to expect my answer to come in a dream, and that I will see their family in my dream and if they are healthy it means that the way they practice religion is true but if they are unhealthy they don't have all the truth.  That night I had a dream and there was a decrepit priest sitting in a wheelchair at the end of my dream, whereas I was very healthy and giving people tours of the city.)  Nothing could ever make me believe that the Book of Mormon isn't true and that Joseph Smith wasn't a prophet of God.  I don't need a dream to tell me what the Holy Ghost already has dozens of times.  Anyway, we all left happy and comfortable, knowing that God would show us what to do.  My week got a lot better after that lesson.

That's all the time I had.

Love,
Sora Jay

Brazil

Querida família,

Happy fourth of July! There are four elders living in my house and all four are from the US, so today we sang the National Anthem, pledged allegience to the flag, and decided to speak lots of English. I am also walking around with a flag sticking out of my belt. You don't know how good the US is until you leave, but now that I am used to Brazil when I back home it will be a culture shock.

This week some crazy things happened, the first thing is that a catholic school next to the church now has an anit-mormon curriculum and the second thing is that we found an elect. We have been teaching a lady names Sandra whose daughter is 14 and is already a member of the church. We had marked Sandra's baptism for this Sunday, but they live in a house that belongs to the Catholic school and the boss-lady of the school told them that they have to choose between the house and the school or the church. The school is funded by donations from Germany and there are lots of people from other religions that go to school there but the old lady doesn't want anyone to go the "Mormon Church." I talked to her for almost two hours the other day but she is stubborn and ignorant, and Satuday the had mass in the school where the subject was "The Mormons are trying to take the youth to there church." I almost got really mad and had "tompertantrum", but I didn't because I knew that it would just make things worse. Sandra still wants to get baptized, but she has to find a new house before she can come to church anymore. She and her daughter are really sad, maybe you guys can pray that God will soften the heart of the old, mean lady or help Sandra find a new house.

One night we brought a young man to seminary and when we were leaving a 20-year-old stopped on his motorcylce and asked at what time the church was open. I talked to him a little and we marked to visit him in his house. He lives really close to the church and he already had a Book of Mormon that he found in the garbage, brought home, and cleaned. We taught him and marked another visit, but the next day he passed on his motorcycle again and said that he had read and felt really good, that he had felt a great peace. He came to church on Sunday a half hour early and already wants to be a missionary. There really are people out there that aren't in the church and aren't keeping the commandments because they don't know any better. We just have to open our mouths.

Gotta go,
Elder Jay Brazil

God Bless America

Hey Everybody,

This week was pretty good we were able to meet with a lot of people.  That pentecostal family that I told you about got a little difficult because they started wanting to Bible bash all the time, and every time that I tried to bring the subject back, somebody would find a verse from the bible and read it to us.  We had a lesson that went super bad and afterward as we were walking back to the bus stop the son, Oni, asked if we were upset.  I told him that we were, because they didn't listen to us.  It's super annoying when people try to teach us stuff out of the Bible because we already know all that stuff and we are there to try to give them more.  They want to teach us (things that we already know) instead of us teaching them (things they don't know yet that would help them a lot).  When I told Oni that we were upset we explained to him again why we were there and asked him what he would do if he found out that Joseph Smith was a prophet, and he said he would get baptized.  The lesson after that went really well.  The dad left when we started though, because the first thing he did was correct Sora Bedebone after she prayed, saying that she should say 'the Holy Ghost' instead of 'the Spirit', but both Oni and his mom told the dad that it was the same thing, so he left and we had a good lesson about prayer and receiving answers.  Hopefully he will forgive everyone and come to the lessons again.

That's cool that Ed found his Area Book again.  I told you it was worth a miracle to get that thing back.

Today, we went out to Castle Bran in the little city of Bran about 45 minutes away from Brasov.  It's a castle where Vlad the Impaler lived.  They didn't have any real cool exhibits about Vlad the Impaler, but the castle was cool.  Everything there was tiny.  People back then must have been a lot smaller.  Elder Simmons, who is over six feet tall, couldn't stand up straight in some of the rooms.  I took a lot of pictures, but now I am too lazy to go through all the trouble of sending them in the mail since I can show them to you when I get back.  I found some secret boxes for cheap so I got one, you guys will like it.
Tourism here really sucks.  They could make tons of money from tourism here, but they don't know how.  Everything still runs the same way it did during communism rather than running well so that they can actually make a profit.  We met some people from Israel at the castle.  They were on a bicycling tour here.  I didn't ask them what religion they were.

We got our new mission president this past week, and today is the first time we have heard from him (through email).  But tomorrow we will have a mini Zone Conference in Arad, the city where I started my mission.  It will be cool to go back there for a day, and it will be interesting to see what the new mission president is like and how he does things differently.

That's probably it for now.  Save a firework for me.

Love,
Sora Jay
