Transferred

Querida familia

This week we had transfers and I was moved to Costa Silva in João Pessoa. My new companion is Elder Santana everyone has good things to say about him. We are gonna tear it up in Costa Silva, but I would have liked to stay in Guarbira to watch General Conference with my recent-converts and to see the dedication of the chapel.

My last week in Guarabira was really good. We found lots and lots of families and good people to teach. We recieved lots of references from the members and all of them were good. 29 new investigators this week including a lawyer and his family.

On Sunday we were practicing the play that the young people will present the day before the dedication of the chapel, when we found out I was going to be transferred. The members of the branch made a farewell family home evening for Sister Wood and I. They made a cake that had my name and they gave some presents and they cried. I left Tuesday morning and stayed with the Zone leaders, but at night when the zone leaders called the sisters they were in the chapel with the youth and they sang a song for me. It was really cool. I'm going to miss Guarabira, but I will work just as hard in my new area.

Tchau,

Elder Jay

Romania 28 March 2011

Hey everybody,

I don't think I have any more time to write than Tom and Ed do, because it is a limit that's given in the white handbook.  They just need to type faster probably.
I liked the pictures.  I think I'll print off that one with Tom jumping through the tropical background; I have a picture of Ed holding a machete that I show to people all the time.  They pronounce the word machete like Americans.
That Catholic church is definitely way different from the orthodox churches, you have to stand up during orthodox services so there aren't really any benches.  I'm glad we get to sit down.

I forgot about St. Patrick's day.  But right now is a type of holiday for the orthodox church; the forty days leading up to Easter are days of fasting, nobody eats meat (and maybe not even any animal products).  I know that they're fasting because they have special treats that they sell that are fasting-approved, they are called 'saints' or 'holies' and they taste pretty good.  I talked to an orthodox priest and he said that he fasted for three days one time without food or water and when I asked him why (what he fasted for) he said it was just because he could.  I didn't tell him that that was lame.  We went to a shaorma (you guys can look that up if you want) place and got some food one day and I asked the guy if he was orthodox (because I figured he wasn't because he was working at a hamburger place during fasting time) and he said he was Muslim.  He didn't speak Romanian very well because he was from Iraq.  I have met lots of Muslims here, but this time I remembered to ask him to write my name in Arabic.  It looks cool.  Maybe I'll take a picture of it and send it to you.  I don't completely trust that guy though, so I'll have to find some more Muslims to see if they write it the same way.

We switched to Daylight Saving Time on Sunday.  I have been waiting forever for it to change, because I automatically start waking up earlier than my alarm clock because the sun comes up too soon.  I got pretty discouraged and irritable with my companion during the past week especially, but ever since we switched the clocks I have been a lot nicer.  Now I'm well rested enough to have good self-control.  It was actually still a little bit bright outside when we went home from bloc-knocking.

I got sunburnt last week, or at least I got a lot more freckles, and we were out contacting without jackets on.  But then it snowed yesterday.

During companionship study Sora Pucket and I discussed what types of instruments we are (for harvesting).  Sora Puckett said that we are probably weed-whackers, and I thought it was really funny.  It's pretty good; we have to whack through thousands of weeds sometimes before we find a prepared person.  And, thinking about it, I realized that I have talked with probably tens of thousands of people in this country but I can number on one hand all of the ones that actually did what I invited them to do.  But, it just means that I have to whack a few thousand more weeds and I'll be able to find some more.

This Sunday was the last Sunday in Romania for Radu, because he is going on his mission to Scotland.  We didn't realize it was his last Sunday otherwise we would have tried to do something special like a musical number, but we didn't.  It was a good Sunday though.  I don't think I have told you guys yet that I have become the regular pianist for Sacrament meeting.  Sometimes Andreea plays some hymns that she has practiced, but usually it's me that plays.  Anyway, on Saturday one of the elders' investigators, Gabi, got baptized, and while he was changing clothes they wanted to sing hymns and so they were throwing out requests and I had to play them.  They requested to play "If you could hie to Kolob," so I just played the top hand.

Well, that's pretty much it for now.  Can you guys tell me when mother's day is?  I know that the American day is different from the European day.

Love,
Sora Jay

P.S.
My favorite book in the Bible so far has been Deuteronomy, but now I have gotten to Isaiah and it is my favorite now.  I read about myself this morning (ch 29) and I noticed how it talked about a 'deep sleep,' in verse 9 I think.  That's why I can fall asleep anywhere even on the Metrou system in Bucharest.

Dearest in Christ

A message from Mrs Celin Jonah celinjonah27@yahoo.fr.

Greetings

Dearest in Christ,

I am Mrs Celin Jonah from France I am married to Dr.Jonah who worked with France embassy in Accra Ghana for nine years before he died in the year 2009. We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days. Before his death we were both born again Christians.Since his death I decided not to re-marry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against.

When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of 2.8Million U.S. Dollars) with one Bank in Accra Ghana. Presently, this money is still with the Bank. Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next three months due to cancer problem.Though what disturbs me most is my stroke Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to church or better still a christian individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct here in.

I want a church that will use this to fund churches, orphanages and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that Blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want my husband's hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner. Hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace.

I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health, because of the presence of my husband's relatives around me always. I don't want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible.

As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the Bank in Accra Ghana.I will also issue you a letter of authority that will empower you as the original- beneficiary of this fund. I want you and the church to always pray for me because the lord is my shepherd. My happiness is that I lived alive of a worthy Christian. Whoever that wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life.and any delay in your reply will give me room in searching for a church or christian individual for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I stated herein. Hoping to hearing from you. Remain blessed in the name of the Lord.

Yours in Christ.
Mrs Celin Jonah

Querida familia,

The new chapel will be dedicated April 9th and there will be an open house for three days before the dedication. There will be a ton of people that will go because it is the best chapel in Guarabira. President Hall told us that he wants at least 50 investigators in the dedication and I think we will be able to do it. Many, many people will be baptized. The members need to be ready to help the recent-converts become strong members, which will be difficult because they like to gossip and fight.

We are making a play with the branch that we will present the night before the dedication. The play is made up of a bunch of skits about the principles in "For the Strength of Youth" and songs about them too. It will be good.

This week they had a training for the leaders of the mission so I stayed in Mamanguape Monday night and Teusday. I stayed with an Elder Gomez, he only has a month in the field. I woke up at two in the morning becuase he was groaning in pain in his lower back. I gave him a blessing and called the other elders and they took him to the hospital where he recieved a shot of painkillers. They said it is probably a kidney stone or a urinary tract infection and now he has to go do some tests and stuff. I already put one elder in a wheel chair the MTC and now I spent one night with an elder and he had to go to the ER.

Gotta go

Elder Jay

Romania 21 March 2011

Hey everybody,

How's it going.

This week has been pretty uneventful.  Just the usual; knocking on people's doors, stopping them on the street, giving out hundreds of pamphlets, etc.
When I was at the church one day I was listening to one of the girls talk and I realized that the way that she pronounced the different conjugations of the verb 'to be' was different from me.  I put the accent on the other syllables.  So then I left all discouraged thinking that for my entire mission I had been pronouncing the most basic verb wrong.  But I told one of the elders and he looked it up in one of his books and said that it is just a regional thing.  In all of the other cities that I've been in it's pronounced the way that I pronounce it.  So that was good.

Ed, I don't drink the tapwater even in Romania, and missionaries here get parasites.  We are all required to take a de-worming pill at the end of our missions.  So, you probably should do something about it.  The worms that Tom drank were probably just some larva, so he probably just got a little more protein.  I heard about one elder who would buy pig skin at the outdoor markets all the time and eat it and one day he got really sick.  They sent him to Germany and said that he had like 36 different kinds of parasites living in him.  But that was from eating the pigskins not from drinking the water.

Anyway, we went up to Chisihau in the Republic of Moldova for district conference on Sunday.  We had to go over the border and show our passports and everything.  We never had to get out of the van though.  There is a guy named Oleg who always drives the missionaries to and from Chisinau and he gets us through the border really easily.  You can take a train there but it takes like three extra hours because they have to change the wheels on the train because the railroad tracks are different sizes.  In Chisinau there is one branch but half of the members speak Russian and half of them speak Romanian (there are some that speak both languages) so they have to have everything translated.  There are little headphones that they give to everyone and somebody who can translate talks into a little microphone and translates for everyone.  They told us that the meeting was going to be in Romanian so we didn't grab any little headsets, but then there actually were a couple of talks in Russian/Ukrainian.  I can understand the basic testimony statements and some of the words are similar to Romanian words but other than that we just sat and listened.  I'm used to talking to people when they show up at church so I was trying to talk to all sorts of people and some of them I couldn't communicate with because they only spoke Russian.  They taught me how to say "I speak Romanian" and they were trying to teach me how to say 'hi' and 'how are you,' but I couldn't get the formal version down.  I know how to say it informally and they told me that I could just say it like that because everyone knows that I'm American anyway.

We drove over some little mountains and saw a ton of little villages and massive vineyards and stuff like that.  There were sheep and cows on the road, and people drawing water from wells, etc.  It would be really cool to go into an area like that to see how it is.  They keep the missionaries to the big cities though.  I tried to take some pictures but the windows of the van were dirty and we were driving really fast so they are blurry anyway.

Well, that's probably all I've got to say.  The only different thing this week was that we had English signups.  Lots of people came, even though we didn't ever have the flyers to give out, but because we put the ads in the newspaper we got about a hundred people to sign up.  We gave them a little form to fill out and on it there was a question about whether or not they would like to know more about the church, and quite a few of them said they would, so hopefully we can have some success from our classes.

We got letters and packages last week and I got the picture of baby Aubrey.  I also got some news from my previous city that some more of the people that I found with Sora Ausen are scheduled to get baptized soon.

Love,
Sora Jay

P.S. last week I was craving a regular candybar, (not a gross Romanian one) and I thought maybe I would be able to get one from Republica Moldova (because they have normal-ish ones from what I've heard) but we were only there on Sunday so I couldn't, but then on Sunday night my companion gave me a swiss-cake roll that she got from her package last week and it was perfect.  And we lived happily ever after.

Since we discovered his death, none of his relations has come forward to claim this money. My Dearest,

I am writing this mail to you With due respect trust and humanity, i appeal to you to exercise a little patience and read through my letter i feel quite safe dealing with you in this important business having gone through your remarkaable profile, honestly i am writing this email to you with pains, tears and sorrow from my heart, i will really like to have a good relationship with you and i have a special reason why i decided to contact you, i decided to contact you due to the urgency of my situation, My name is Miss
Alice Kipkalya Kones, 25yrs old female and I from Kenya in  Africa. My father was the former Kenyan road Minister. He and Assistant Minister of Home Affairs Lorna Laboso had been on board the Cessna 210, which was headed to Kericho and crashed in a remote area called Kajong'a, in western Kenya .. The plane crashed on the Tuesday 10th, June, 2008.

After the burial of my father, my stepmother and uncle conspired and sold my father's property to an Italian Expertrate which the shared the money among themselves and live nothing for me. One faithful morning, I opened my father's briefcase and found out the documents which he have deposited huge amount of money in one bank in Burkina Faso with my name as the next of kin. I travelled to Burkina Faso to withdraw the money for a better life so that I can take care of myself and start a new life, on my arrival, the Bank Director whom I met in person told me that my father's instruction to the bank is that the money would only be release to me when I am married or present a trustee who will help me and invest the money overseas... I am in search of an honest and reliable person who will help me and stand as my trustee so that I will present him to the Bank for transfer of the money to his bank account overseas.

I have chosen to contact you after my prayers and I believe that you will not betray my trust. But rather take me as your own sister. Though you may wonder why I am so soon revealing myself to you without knowing you, well I will say that my mind convinced me that you may be the true person to help me.. Moreover, I will like to disclose much to you if you can help me to relocate to your country because my stepmothers have threatened to assinate me. The amount is( $9.4 USD )Million United State Dollars, and I have confirmed from the bank in Burkina Faso on my arrival, You will also help me to place the money in a more profitable business venture in your Country. However, you will help by recommending a nice University in your country so that I can complete my studies. It is my intention to compensate you with 40% of the total money for your services and the balance shall be my capital in your establishment. As soon as I receive your positive response showing your interest I will put things into action immediately. In the light of the above, I shall appreciate an urgent message indicating your ability and willingness to handle this transaction sincerely. Awaiting your urgent and positive response. Please do keep this only to your self for now until the bank will transfer the fund. I beg you not to disclose it till i come over because I am afraid of my wreaked stepmother who has threatened to kill me and have the money alone ,I thank God Today that am out from my country (KENYA) but now In (Burkina Faso) where my father deposited these money with my name as the next of Kin.. I have the documents for the claims.

Yours Sincerely
Alice Kipkalya Kones.

We went to lunch on Friday and the sister told us that there had been a huge earthquake in the US and lots of people had died, but the people say that everthing happens in the US, so I guessed that it had happened somewhere else and she had just said the US. One of the sisters in our district got a little worried though. Was there much damage on the west coast?

This week was pretty good. We had a conference with three zones, and they talked a lot about teaching families and help recent-converts become strong in the church. The Brazil area has the lowest retention in the world, and João Pessoa has the worst retention in Brazil. It was the highest baptizing mission in the world, but the missionaries baptized just for numbers and now there are tons and tons of inactive members. Our focus should be conversion, and baptism is a step in the conversion process.

President Hall told us that the new chapel will be dedicated the first or second week of April, but I´m sure there won´t be enough room for all of the people that will come to the dedication. We have talked to hundreds of people that won´t to go visit the "most beautiful church in the city." President Hall said that we have the chance to change the entire city of Guarabira. The members just have to be ready to recieve all of the people that will come.

This week Ryssa, a young women that we baptized two months ago gave a talk in church. The branch president called her Saturday night, but she accepted and gave a really good talk. She talked about faith and said that the first time she prayed about the Book of Mormon, she didn´t pray with faith becuase she didn´t want it to be true and she didn´t want to change her religion or anything, but that after talking to us a little more, coming to church and thinking really good she prayed again and recieved an answer.

Times up

see ya
Elder Jay

Romania 14 March 2011

Hello again,

This week we had only three lessons again, but the elders told us that a lot of the contacts we have had they would have counted as lessons.  I don't think it really matters in the end as long as we are doing missionary work.

I put some ads in the newspapers here for our English classes this week.  I didn't know the word for 'ads' when I showed up at the newspaper place and I just started talking to them and I accidentally used the work "avertisment," immediately as it came out of my mouth I realized that it was wrong and the people looked shocked, because that is the word for "warning."  So I went in there and told them I had to put a warning in the newspaper.  But then I explained to them what I really wanted and they told me the correct work, anunt.
We put the elders number in one of the newspapers and our number in the other one.  The elders have been getting tons of phonecalls and we have been getting hardly any, so now we know which newspaper we should use in the future, instead of paying for both of them.

One of them members at church said that she was talking to one of her friends about the church and about praying to know if the Book of Mormon is true and her friend said that she would stick to her orthodox traditions anyway.  The member asked her "If God told you that your traditions were wrong would you still keep them?" and the person answered "Yes."  I was proud of her for sharing the gospel.  I've met a few people who have said that to me too, one guy who said that to me was with a girl at the time and when he said it the girl looked at him like he was an idiot, which we appreciated.  We told him that we didn't have anything to talk about then and ended our discussion.

I went to the city building and requested permission to set up a display on the street again.  My newest missionary occupation is 'public relations specialist.'  I realized that none of my districts have ever done as many public things as this one has, and I realized it was because I had never done it in any of my districts.  No missionary really knows how to go about those types of things unless somebody teaches them, and nobody has done it much so nobody can teach anyone else to do it, so somebody has to start it.  So far I have done it all, but I have written down exactly how to do it for the following missionaries and I will tell the elders how to too.  It's dumb that we've never done stuff like putting things in the newspaper before, and setting up the display is really successful so we need to do it a lot more often.

This week we had a Book of Mormon drop off contact.  We gave the Book of Mormon to a cool family and told them to read it and said we would come back in two weeks to see how they liked it, without really explaining much else except that it wasn't orthodox (because we didn't have the opportunity; they didn't want to stand there and chat at the moment).  So we'll see how this one turns out.  Every time I've done it they actually did read.  Hopefully they will get converted by it.

Well, that's probably all I have for now.  It was really cool to get those statistics about the religions in the United States and Romania.  Thanks!

Love,
Sora Jay

P.S.
I'm going to start making a list of my missionary occupations.
And, we have transfers this week, but both me and my companion are staying here so nothing changes.  One of the elders is getting a new companion and that's it.

Querida Familia,

Thanks for all the emails. They were especially good today.

I have a story that will make you guys sick. Elder Siqueira and I were in the house of a young man that we baptized and we were teaching his sister. Elder Siqueira asked for some water so she brought a pitcher and a cup and he drank two cups really fast. Then, I drank a cup and started to drink a second, but as I was drinking a looked into the cup and there were a bunch of little white worms swimming around. Not wanting to interfere with the lesson I set the cup down on the table and sat there in silence. I couldn´t teach anymore, I was just thinking about the little white worms in my stomach. Unfortunatley, because I didn't say anything, Elder Siqueira grabbed the cup and drank the rest. After the lesson I told him what had happened so we went and bought Sprite to try to burn the worms out, but I don´t think it did anything. It happened six days ago and we haven´t gotten sick yet. The blessings of being a missionary!

Yesterday I got a little frustrated because almost everyone here is a dunce. I wanted to run out in the street and yell, in English, "Why are you all so stupid!" But, I didn´t and after I said a prayer and felt better. I'm learning to be more pacient and loving with people.

This week is Carnaval, so the church took all of the young people out of the cities for a week long camp. Here in Guarabira the parties are pretty small, but in some areas the missionaries aren´t allowed to leave the apartment. Brazil is a party country, they throw parties for evertything. I'm glad I was born in Utah in the church.

Gotta go

Elder Jay Brazil

Romania 7 March 2011

La multi ani!

Hey everyone.

I thought it was really funny that Ed said he has been getting Romania numbers for the past few weeks, especially because he got 13 lessons total in the past three weeks, because that is exactly what I have gotten in these past three weeks.  Don't worry about it though, Ed, because even in Romania I have managed to get 30 lessons in a week.
And Tom, I thought that playing soccer was forbidden worldwide to all missionaries, because that's where all of their injuries come from.  At least that's the way it is in Romania and all of Europe.  Otherwise, I would practice so that I could beat the crap out of you.  But, I'll just have really ripped legs from walking everywhere and from climbing thousands of stairs every day in people's blocs.

In Romania every school has a religion class where they teach them about orthodoxism, and other religions sometimes.  That's where they learn about their church (since the actual church services are usually a priest singing from what Romanians tell me).  So, we talked to a few people and when we asked them for referrals they said that we should try talking to professors for religion classes and maybe they would let us present something about our religion.  Enough people said it to us that we though it might be worth a try.  So the first thing we did was call President and ask him if it was an okay thing for us to do, and he said it would be wonderful if we succeeded.  So then we asked around and tried to find the religion department of the main University in this city, we went back and forth between a few places asking for directions and looking at our map but we ended up not finding it.  So then we looked in the phone book and I found the number for the theology department and called it.  A secretary answered the phone and I told her who we were and that I was aware that they taught about other religions in some of their classes and asked if we could speak to somebody about what we believe in our religion.  She was nice to us, but then she handed the phone to some guy who freaked out.  He got really mad and was yelling at us on the phone and then hung up on us.  I was pretty surprised, because I worked in an office (in the library) at BYU and I figured that the professors and staff would at least be polite or politically correct, but I guess not.
Some of the things he yelled made me think that he must have thought that I was a lawyer for the church, because he said something about going through the government and laws to accomplish whatever it was that we wanted.  That fact that he got really defensive makes me wonder if there are any things that they are doing that would be considered unlawful, regarding our religion.  They definitely say bad things about us.

One of our new investigators (that we found from putting up posters on the street and handing out materials) said that she asked her religion teacher (most of them are priests) about the book that we gave her, the BoM, and he asked her if she had taken a copy of it.  She said yes, and he told her that she had already sinned and should get rid of it.  But, I think it ultimately just made her want to meet with us even more.

We met a nice priest yesterday though.  We found his number in the potentials section in the Area book and asked him if we could talk.  He works at the church right next to our apartment, I think.  So we told him to come to the church to meet with us (it was a struggle for him to find it because it's in a really terrible location) and he came.  He didn't want to come inside the church so we chatted a little outside the gate and then he gave us his business card and left.  He was really nice the whole time.  He said that he had received a copy of the Book of Mormon from the missionaries that had contacted him (by knocking on his door, I think) but that he had given it to his co-worker priests.  He left before we could talk too much because his car was blocking the little road, but he said we would talk again.  He was wearing his priest robes and everything when he came to meet us.  He was a really nice guy.  So, not all priests are bad.  At least a couple have been converted that I know of, even though they lost everything when they did.

When we are knocking in the blocs it's normal for people to tell us that they won't listen to us because "their parents are orthodox, their grandparents are orthodox, and their ancestors are all orthodox," so they will stay orthodox.  But yesterday this one guy said to us "Why are you going around with that religion, you were born and baptized orthodox and your families and relatives are all orthodox, and all your ancestors were orthodox, so stop going around with these books." And I said, "I never was orthodox, and neither was anyone in my family. I'm from America."  The statement seemed to cause him to stop and think.  Then he said "Well, 97% of the people here are orthodox so you won't have any success."  And we were like, "we already have had success," and knocked the rest of the doors in his bloc.

I'm pretty sure it's not quite 97%.  That's way too unanimous for any political statistic, from what I remember (80% concerning people is pretty much the equivalent of 100%).  People always ask us if the majority of people in America (the US) are Catholics and I always just say "not really," because I don't actually know.  Plus, I think I've only met one or two catholic people in my entire life.  I'd like to know what percentage of people in the US are orthodox, and what percent are Mormon.

Well, that's it for this week.

Love,
Sora Jay
