This will be my last e-mail as Elder Jay. It's sad isn't it.

First things first. To call the chapel from the US the number is 011-55-84-3208-5695. I will be in the chapel around 2:00 or 2:30 my time, which is 11:00 or 11:30 in Utah, I think. You will have to verify that. I don't know what we will be able to talk about because I will be home 5 days later, but we'll think of something. We can make plans of what we are going to do.

Yesterday we baptized a young man named Tasso. He is another friend of Ruchemberg. Ruchemberg and his friends are great, in a couple of years all of them will be on a mission. When Ruchemberg was baptized a seventy played the piano and shared a message, and the week between his baptism and confirmation he sat in the third row to watch a fireside with Elder Holland, and next week he will go to the temple for the first time and when he gets back he will baptize his younger brother. We are baptizing great people here.

Today we had a zone p-day to celebrate my death. We played volleyball in the Church and then we had a brazilian barbeque with the stake president and his wife. There was so much meat that not even a zone of missionaries could eat it all, and it was good too. The stake president is from the south of Brazil where they are famous for their barbeques. Afterward I left my last message with the zone. This week was the best week in the 2 and a half months that the zone exists, we baptized 10 people, 2 of them being men and one family.

When I get home you guys are going to have to help me not be trunky for the mission. I miss you guys and I am excited to be going home, but I can tell you that it is going to be really hard for me in the beginning.

Coming home

Querida família,

I have been keeping a secret for a little while because I didn't want to get trunky, but I won't stay another month and I will be arriving in Utah on the 18th of May. I'm not sure of when I will get there because I still don't have my itinerary, but on the 17th I'm going to the temple in Recife and from there we will go to the airport. It is really strange to think that my mission is already ending. It feels like it will just be a normal transfer and I will have a new area and a new companion, but two years have already past and it is coming to an end. I'm happy and sad at the same time.

This week we baptized a young man named Lucas, he is a friend of Ruchemberg that we baptized last week. We are also teachings Lucas' parents and I believe that they will be baptized shortly. Things are going really well here in our area and May will be full of baptisms, too bad that I won't be here at the end of the month, but I am happy because I will be with you guys.

The big news this week is that Elder Holland came and talked to us. It was amazing. When he arrived in the chapel he shook hands with all of us and looked us in the eye. Then, when he was talking he told why he shakes our hands. He said that our eyes are the window of ou soul, that he could see the eternity in our eyes and that he had interviewed every single one of us. He talked about the power and authority of our calling and asked us to promisse that we would never walk away from the Church. You know how Elder Holland is, he got really emotional, hit the pulpit a little and said, almost yelling, "Promisse me! Promisse me tonight that you will never walk away from this Church!" Talk about a firm commitment. I think every missionary promissed in their heart that they would never leave the Church. We also heard from his wife and from Elder Mazzagardi and his wife. Sister Holland bore her testimony that her husband is an Apostle saying, "I hear the way he prays, I have seen bless and cure the sick, I have seen him recieve revelation" among other things.

Yesterday we had a really special baptismal service. In the beginning of the month we baptized a man named Danillo and yesterday he baptized his wife, Cinthia. She was afraid of how her family would react, but her parents came and watched the baptism and they liked it a lot. Cinthia was crying when she entered the font and after as well. We also baptized a 16-year-old named Ruchemberg. He is great, he already started seminary and wants to serve a mission and next week we are going to baptize a friend of his that he introduced to us. We had the meeting in the chapel and we had a an area seventy Elder Camargo that played the piano and gave a little talk. Elder Camargo is the CEO of the university where Danillo works, there are a lot of members that work there. Maybe it will become BYU Brazil soon.

Also, Elder Holland will be here tomorrow in the chapel in my area. Sister Hall put me and my companion in charge of a choir that will sing for him. I'm kind of nervous to sing in front of Elder Holland, but it will be awesome!

This week I did two divisions, the first I went to an area called Ponta Negra that is even richer than my area. We say the beach while were in the bus, there are miles and miles of perfect beaches here. The second division was in Parnamirim, I stayed with an american that is in his second transfer. We had to catch a bus to go to an appointment, but he got the wrong bus and we ended up getting a little lost. We found our way back, but we were really late to everything afterwards.

Not much else happened this week, so I will talk with you later.

Sorry that I haven't written much these last two weeks, I have been pretty busy. I will just tell the most the highlights.

First off, Elder Holland is going to visit our mission on the 24th and it just so happens that he is coming to the chapel in my area. Talk about good luck! I am going to take all of my recent-converts and investigators to fireside. I also thought about marking a baptism on the 24th, but I don't think that they would let us. I was in the MTC during the new mission president training-thingy and we had a fireside with 8 apostles, when I got here in october of 2010 we had a meeting with Elder Bednar and now we will have one with Elder Holland. We are going to be the first ones in the chapel and sit right up front.

We also had a little scar a couple weeks ago. The mission rented a van to take us to the zone leader coucil in João Pessoa. All of the zone leaders from Rio Grande do Norte were in the van. We were about two hours from João Pessoa, I was laying down on the back bench and everyone else was asleep or trying to sleep when suddenly the driver hit the brakes and we ran in to something. After the impact a looked up and saw that we had run into the back a semi-truck. Happily all of the missionaries had their seatbelts on except for me because I had taken it off to lay down. The front of the van was totalled, but no one was hurt besides some bruises, and some nametags that had flown around, not even the missionary in the passenger seat was injured. My shoulder gave a pretty good whack on the bench in front of me and it actually tore out on of the bolts and knocked the bench out of place. We got out of the man and hithhiked until the next city where there was another van that took us the rest of the way. The Lord protected us and we arrived in saftey. Thanks for praying for our safety.

In João Pessoa, next to the presidents house, there is a guy that walks in the road selling little yogurts. He yells louder than any man I have ever seen so after the counsel I ran him down and bought three yogurts so that we would yell "Só batiza!" which means "Just baptize!" It was awesome.

oops, We had transfers. I stayed in cidade verde so it will be my last area. I had to stay in the bus station all day to make sure that everyone got on their way and arrived in safety so I don't have very much time to write. I'm doing great and we are going to baptize lots of people in these last weeks. On Monday we marked baptisms of three people, yesterday we marked another and we are going to mark three more today. Everyone needs to baptized and I want to end helping lots of people enter in the waters of baptism.

This week we baptized a 12-year-old youngman named Álvaro. His mom and older sister are members, but he and wasn't and his dad, Claudio isn't yet. All of Claudio's family are also members except for him and his dad but both of them went to church yesterday to watch the baptism. It was a really special baptism and everyone got a little emocional and Álvaro's dad and grandpa hugged us and said thankyou. We baptized the son, now we need to baptize the dad and grandpa.

A couple we are teaching, Danilo e Cintia, also stayed to watch the baptism. We invited them earlier in the week to be baptized April 1st. Danilo wants to be baptized, but Cintia is afraid of her family and Danilo doesn't want to be baptized without his wife. They are great people and will definitley be leaders after their baptism, they have already told several time that they want their future son to be a missionary.

There is another man here named Gerson whose wife is the Relief Society President. He has had contact with the church for more than 20 years, but hasn't been baptized yet. He already knows alot about the church so on Friday we talked with him about temples and eternal families. His wife cried and told us how much she wanted to be sealed in the temple with her husband and daughter. We asked Gerson why he doesn't go to the temple and be sealed with his family and he said that only members can go to the temple and he isn't a member yet. He emphasized the yet. We also read a little from President Uchtdorf's talk "Your Privilege, Your Potential" and told him that is living way below his potential and invited him to be baptized on the 8th. He said he will think about it. It will take a miracle, but I really think he will be baptized soon. There are a lot of men here aren't members, but whose wives are members and weare working to baptize them. They are progressing slowly.

8 Sundays

Querida família,

I don't want you to think that I am trunky, but I only have eight more Sundays on my mission. I have 8 more Sundays to baptize.

Anyway, Monday we had a family home evening with a member family and a couple of newlyweds, Danilo and Cinthia that came to Church with them and are already reading the Book of Mormon. We taught the about the Restoration. They are very intelligent and asked a lot of questions. The wife is a lawyer and the husband works the member in the financial department in a university. The presidente of this university is Elder Milton Camargo an area seventy. After the message we ate pizza and they a chocolate pizza with icecream for dessert. This is one of the richest areas in the mission, and I am liking it because the food is good:)

On Tuesday we did splits with one of the district leaders, I was with a greenie named Elder Shreeve and we ended up doing lots of contacts. I was trying to help him lose his shyness so we stopped a couple of times in the road and asked people if they wanted to be baptized right off the bat. It is actually pretty fun.

Wednesday was pretty uneventful, but on Thursday we taught Danilo and Cinthia again. They had a lot of questions about the Plan of Salvation, Where did we come from? Why are we here? What happens after death? They really want to find the answers, but the lessons take forever because they ask lots of questions, which is good. 

On Friday we taught a 17-year-old named Lucas. His family moved from Rio de Janeiro to Natal a year ago and the opened a sweets shop. A member who is also from Rio bought some candy there, talked with them and found out that the mom had been baptized as a teenager, but became inactive after turning 18. Now she is married had has two children and said it is time to come back. Lucas has been looking for a church, but hasn't found one that he called his atention. We took him to the chapel and showed him all the rooms then we taught him the Restoration using a chalkboard. The Spirit was very strong and you could see that everything clicked in his mind. I was saying, "This isn't just another church among many" But he cut me off and completed the phrase, "It's the Church of Jesus Christ." When we showed him the Book of Mormon he said, "I want that book. How do get a book like this?" We marked his baptism for the 25th. We also taught a family of four that were referrals from another member. They are really cool as well and gave us soccer jerseys and a dinner. My shirt is one of those old school ones that you tie up.

My times up, but on Sunday we confirmed Edileuza and we had a missionary fireside where the stake president and Elder Camargo of the seventy spoke.

This week we had transfers. I don't have much time to write this week so I will be fast.

On Saturday we baptized a really special family, Juvenilton and Janaina. I think they are some of the best baptisms since the church arrived in Sousa. They both graduated from college, have good jobs, have a car and are really inteligent. The Church needs leaders in Sousa. The other family Edjailton and Ana Carolina will get married on the 8th and be baptized on the 10th. Juvenilton will be the patriarch some day and Edjailton will be the stake president. I'm sad that I left before their baptism and that I won't be able to stay a little longer to help them get started as members.

On Sunday we baptized another lady, Miriam. She is super elect as well. She passed 7 and a half years in the Jehovah's Witness and already went to lots of other churches, but never felt the Spirit until she went to the true church.

I was transfered from Sousa to Natal. It is a pretty long journey. I got a bus at 7:40am in Sousa and got here in Natal around 8:30pm. I travelled alone the whole time and didn't see another missionary until I got here in Natal and waited in the bus station for about 15 minutes. My companion came with the stake president and they gave me a ride to our apartment. The stake president's daughter was Mia Well's companion until, small world.

My new companion is Elder Machado da Silva. They divided a zone and we are opening the new zone called Zona Ponta Negra. My area is Cidade Verde. It is really different from Sousa because the wards are strong, there are families that have been in the Church for generations, and it is a rich area with lots of apartments.

There is a guy at my side watching porn so I am going to leave.

I'll give a run down of the week:

Monday was P-day and we ate lunch with the Petries. I never appreciated peanut-butter and jam sanwiches as much as I did on Monday. The Petries have peanut-butter that their children sent to them and they found some "Great Value" jam in Campina Grande. They also made a ham and cheese sanwiches and a chicken salad sandwich for each of us. I don't remember what we did the rest of P-day, but I know I didn't sleep. It has been a long time since I took a nap. At night we visited Juvenilton and Janina and their 5-year-old daughter Emille(Emily). After we taught them they gave us some grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Then we went to get our stuff so we could go to João Pessoa again and the Petries came by and gave us a pizza to cook and some cookies to eat while we traveled. We got in the bus at 11:10 and went to João Pessoa.

Tuesday we had a Leadership training with all the zone leaders and district leaders. It went from 7:15 until 1:00 and from 1:45 until 3:00. It is really hard to stay awake during these meetings when you have to travel through the night. I was on the front bench and tried my best to keep my eyes open. After the meeting we went to the mission office to gets some more money to pay the way back. Four of us from Sousa went and I think we had about ten reais in total. We got a bus at 6:00 pm and got home about 2:00 in the morning.

Wednesday we taught a lady named Miriam whose son is a member, but is less-active. She passed 7 years in the Jehovah's Witness, but was never baptized. We marked her baptism for the 26th. We also taught Juvenilton and another family that is really, really good, Edjailton e Karol, they will get married on the 8th of March and be baptized on the 10th. We also taught Ivoneide, the most famous radio host in Sousa.

Thursday we taught a lot, but there wasn't really anything special. We found a lot of people that like to talk. There are quit a few people here that can have a conversation with themselves. They start talking and change the subject a lot, but never stop. Sometimes they even say things that make themselves get mad.

On Friday we walked a lot but most everything fell through. Around 8:30 at night a drunk stopped on his motorcycle and said that he had already talked with missionaries in São Paulo and that he needed religion in his life. He was really wasted and we were worried that he would fall of his motorcycle so we walked home with him. We met his wife/girlfriend, she is a nurse. We need to talk with that guy again when he isn't drunk to see if he really wants something with his life. Friday is also the beginning of Carnaval, so it started to rain at night. Also all the young-men and young-women went on a campout during Carnaval. Lots of the adults went as well supposedley to chaparone, but they really just want to play.

On Saturday it rained like crazy all afternoon and into the night. There was lots of lightning and thunder too that made so the people couldn't stay in the road drinking and listening to really loud music. Lots of the roads turned into rivers and we had water up to our knees in some places. At night we had the baptismal interview for Juvenilton and Janaina. They passed, but Janaina is afraid of her familiy's reaction.

Sunday there were about 25 people at church becuase everyone was camping. All of the district presidency and branch presidency went to the campout and the left the branch abondened. All of the professors also went. We taught both of the classes, gave talks, blessed the sacrament in Sousa branch, and passed the sacrament in Estação branch. Juvenilton and Janaina weren't baptized yet. Juvenilton really wants too, and they both have testimonies, but Janaina is afraid of her family. It rained all day again. They must be suffering on the campout with all this rain. Serves them right.

This was a really busy week. The following is the story of my travels:

 

Monday at 11:40 pm we took a bus to João Pessoa and got there at 5:30 am and then we had the zone leader council. The only good things about going to the Zon leader counsel are that you get to see your mission buddies and here all the stories, and you get to eat in President Hall's house. Sister Hall made chicken enchiladas and other mexican food that was really good, and açai.

 

Tuesday at 5:00 pm we took a bus from João Pessoa back to Sousa and Got here at 1:00 am Wednesday, but this time we had boxes full of copies of the Book of Mormon and pamphlets and packages that we took home. At 2:00 am we called the district leaders just to wake them up and yell "BAPTISM!"

 

Wednesday we stayed here in Sousa and visited some people. I don't remember Wednesday very well.

 

Thursday morning we got in a van and went to Pau dos Ferros where they opened a new group and visited some people in a little town of 500 inhabitants. For some reason they are holding the meetings in this little town instead of in the city, but next week they will move to the city. We slept there in the little city, in the house that used to be used as a butcher shop, but now the cleaned it out. It is a lot better that way, no more dead pigs hanging from the cieling:)

 

Friday we got up at 3:30 am to go to the city and take the van back to Sousa. We ate lunch here then we went to Cajazeiras to do some baptismal interviews and an exchange. I stayed in Cajazeirs and Elder Rolim came back to Sousa.

 

Saturday I came back to Sousa and we ended the exchange, ate lunch then we went to Pombal to do another interview. We got back to Sousa and interviewed a family that the sisters are teaching. I interviewed the husband and it was a very good experience, we both felt the spirit very strongly. Finally went to visit our investigators to remind them about church.

 

Sunday morning we went to and Edjailton(future stake president) e Karol's house and the gave us buchada. Buchada is a ram's stomach filled with his intestines and who knows what else. You fill up the stomach, sow it shut and cook it. It was actually pretty good. Then we went to church and the meetings were actually really good this week. The second couselor of the mission came and gave a talk about being positive and Elder Petrie(the couple missionary) talked about temples. After church we went to the baptism of the sister's family, then left do visit. At night we were hungry, it was Sunday so we couldn't buy anything and we were broke anyway so we went to  a member 's hous the mom made some food for us. then we came home and slept.

This week was a little rough, but it ended really well. We have been working hard to help the branch and the district here and bring good people to church, but a lot of the time I feel the members don´t care about the growth of the church. We've suceeded in getting the district president and the branch president on our side, but most of the time I feel like we are working alone to baptize, reactivate and retain. This week in church I got a little frustrated because I want to do more to help, but I can't, it depends on the members. I was also really dissapointed because it has been a while since I baptized and the zone had a horrible month.

 

After church we went to visit one of our investigator families Edjailton e Karol. We had marked to pass by on Tuesday, but we wanted to see what they thought of church this week. They had told us that they wanted a Gospel Principles book, so we took one with us to use it as an excuse to go in. We got there and started talking with them. They told us that they had made the decision to get married and be baptized this month. It was the best thing I have heard this year! After all the work and struggles they finally got an answer and are going to be baptized! They are a great family and will be able to help the Church out a lot. Edjailton will be the first stake president here when the district turns into a stake.

 

Earlier in the week when we passed by there prayed with them to recieve an answer that the Book of Mormon is true. Karol got an answer that same night, but Edjailton wanted something more. We promissed him that he would recieve and answer at church, and he did. I also brought a little cardboard box full of coins that I have been saving for 7 or 8 months. I have about 240 reais. To get married here you have to pay 200 reais. Edjailton worked as a manager in a car dealership, but the owners closed the dealership and he is looking for another job. I offered to pay for their marriage because I thought they might need help. Karol started to cry and they said that they could pay for it. Edjailton will go to the cartório today to get the paper work going and they will be baptized this month. Família eleita!

 

We are teaching a couple other families as well. One of them is Juvenilton and Janaina. They are really inteligent and have been studying about the church on the internet and everything. They have asked some difficult questions, but we have been able to answer all of them and focus on a testimony of the Book of Mormon. The only problem is that Janaina works most Sundays, but I belive that they will be baptized this month as well. They just need to recieve and recognize answers to their prayers.

 

God has blessed us with some great families to teach, and we found all of them knocking on doors and talking with people in the street.

This week was wierd becaus it was great and crappy at the same time. First I will tell you why it was kind of crappy, all of the baptisms in our zone fell through except for one and this was after two weeks without a baptism. Our zone and the branches have been kind of depressed, but things are getting better now. I became a little crazy when I came here becuase I am forcing myself to always be overly excited and happy. One time I even stood up on a chair during lunch and sang "Scattering Sunshine" becuase everyone was sad.

 

Now the good news. We brought two new families to church on Sunday and the attendance in sacrament meeting was 89. We have been bringing families to church every week, and the members love it. Everyone is getting more excited and we are even getting some referrals. We are teaching three families that are really special and will be leaders in the church if/when they are baptized. We also brought a lady to church that has a radio talk station and found out that she is famous here in Sousa. I don't know if I told you, but we taught the mayor's dad and we also met his secertary in the street, we are going to visit both of them again. I think we need to baptize the mayor.

 

Also this week we had interviews with President Hall and my companion and I did exchanges with the assistents to the president. One of the assistents was my companion in the MTC and we worked together. It was the first time we taught together since the practices in the MTC, and it was awesome. We can actually speak portuguese now. In my interview with President Hall he told me that he doesn't pray for me very much. It was funny because he said it was the best compliment he could give me. He said he doesn´t worry about me so he doesn't feel the need to pray for me.

 

This week we did a famliy home evening in a members house and called all of the inactives to come. It was a pretty good turnout and it was really fun. We played a game kind of like Hot-potato, but we were using a cup of water that we passed around in a circle while one guy sang "Agua mineral". When he stopped singing the person with the cup had to drink the water. Some people got pretty wet in the mayhem. Happily, I didn't have to drink any water, I didn't want to use that cup after so many people had drunken from it.

My new companion is Elder Rolim, he is from Curitiba and he is awesome. It has been a long time since I baptized and I have saudades, but we have some really good people that will be baptized soon. Edjailton (who is currently an investigator, but will be a stake president) is progressing very well. His wife and son went to João Pessoa this week and he came to church all by himself. On Friday night we went to his house and he told us about some dreams he had a few years ago. He had told me about the dreams before and I had studied a little to be able to interpret them, so I pulled a little "Joseph in Egypt" and interpreted his dreams using the scriptures to show him that he needed to be baptized, recieve the priesthood and not give in to the problems that would come after. It was really cool, scriptures came to my mind that I could use to interpret the different things in his dreams, and I know that it was God guiding me.

 

I have a new nickname here in Sousa. Do you guys know who Bam-bam is in the Flintstones? There is a recent-convert here who gave me a doll of Bam-bam and then when she was bearining her testimony on fast Sunday she talked about the missionaries. She called Elder Walton and Elder David angels and then said that I am her Bam-bam. Don't worry, she isn't a snake. She is married and has kids our age, but she considers the missionaries her children as well.

Hey everybody! Today we had transfers. I stayed here in Sousa, but Elder Walton was transfered to Mamanguape. My new companion will be Elder Rolim. He'll be the first brazilian companion I have had in a long time.

Today the Petries are my companions because there aren't any other missionaries in Sousa. I get to pass the day in their air-conditioned apartment and right now I am using their laptop to send this email. It`s great being in the same area with a couple missionary.

On Sunday we had an attendance of 60 or 70. I taught about our Heavenly Family in Gospel Principles and I gave a talk in sacrament meeting. Edjailton e Karol came to church again. Seriously, they are one of the best families that I have met on my mission, I could see Edjailton being a stake president some day. The girl that we were going to baptize next Sunday came to church, but then went to a party and got wasted. Now she said that she is going to Maranhao, a state in northern Brazil. I don't like teaching young women here. It has been really difficult to baptize lately, everything keeps falling through, but I have faith that we will still find someone who will be baptized this month.

It was pretty embarassing  so I made Elder Walton walk close behind the whole time so  no one would see.

 

This week we had a member with us everyday while we worked. We visited a bunch of inactives and got the members to work a little as well and yesterday  86 people went to sacrament meeting. The last three weeks the attendance was: 37, 38, 38, so this week was a lot better.

 

We also brought two investigator families to church. They are really good families that would be able to strengthen the church a lot. Their names are Derval e Ledjia, e Edjailton e Karol. These people need to be baptized. The Church desperately needs leaders here. Pray that they will recieve testimonies and be baptized.

It is with excitement and hope that we can both work together that I write you this mail today. I am staff of an International Bank here in the South Africa attached in Private Banking services; I am contacting you in reference to an investment opportunity which I believe would be of significant reward to the parties involved. It concerns a customer that came to our bank to engage in Private Banking services, the customer had a financial portfolio of USD12,000,000.00 and he desired to have us turn over on his behalf in the purchase of securities in the capital markets. Been my duty to offer strategic advisory services to the customer, I made him consider the various investment opportunity available at the Bank at that time.
Having given heed to my advice, I had the funds dispersed over the available investment opportunities and we made attractive margins. The margins made were not however the full potential of the funds, but the customer desired low risk guaranteed returns on investments. I was also given instruction to liquidate the funds after 4 years for some Investment requiring cash payments. Following that order, the portfolio liquidate and the total investment stand at USD12,995,720.00, this amount had remain dormant for more than five years so the bank launch an investigation to contact the customer for some final instructions but could not reach him anymore and later found out that he died in a Saudi Arabia hospital.
What I wish to relate to you will smack of unethical practice but I want you to understand something. It is only an outsider to the banking world who finds the internal politics of the banking world aberrational. The world of private banking especially is fraught with huge rewards for those who occupy certain offices and oversee certain portfolios. You should have begun by now to put together the general direction of what I propose. There USD12,995,720.00 deposited, I alone have the deposit details and they will release the deposit to no one unless I instruct them to do so. This bank has spent great amounts of money trying to track this man's family; they have investigated for months and have found no family, the investigation has come to an end and Since the original owner listed no next of kin in his bio-data form, my proposition is this; I am prepared to place you in a position to instruct my Bank to release the deposit to you as the closest beneficiary.
I am prepared to place you in a position of the beneficiary and release the deposit to you as the closest surviving partner. Upon receipt of the deposit, I will share the money with you in half, this means I will simply nominate you as the beneficiary and have then release the deposit to you. We share the proceeds 50/50. I would have gone ahead to ask the funds be released to me, but that would have drawn a straight line to me and my involvement in claiming the deposit. But you as a foreigner and also with all the necessary legal and official documentations from me and also with the authority vested upon me by the original depositor, you would easily pass as the beneficiary with the rights to claim. I assure you that I could have the deposit released to you in a few days. Please do not ruin this chance for me if you do not approve of the transaction. If you do not give this transaction a positive approval, kindly delete this email and let me move on with my life.

It was great to talk with you guy on Christmas. It has been a long time since I talked with Ed and Ariel. When I first heard Ed talking I was trying to figure out who it was because I could here a voice, but couldn't see anyone talking on the webcam.

 

We passed a good part of Christmas day with the Petries, a senior couple here. They are the only senior couple in this mission and we have the luck to be in the same city with them. Sister Petrie made roast beef and potatoes and gravy and other good american things to eat. They also let us use their computer to skype with you.

 

These past couple weeks the missionary work has been pretty slow. Everyone has been traveling, drinking and going to parties until 6 in the morning, but now things are going to get better. We only had one investigator in church on Sunday. She is a dentist from São Paulo, but she is working here in Sousa. She went to church with us, but she disliked the Relief Society so much that she almost cried and went home early. This branch has problems, but it will get better.

 

New Year's Eve we went to a member's house where they were also celebrating the birhtday of Patrícia, a member girl. We did a secret-santa thing and I got cologne and Elder Walton got Cologne (missionaries stink). I had to give a present to a the husband of a recent-convert. He isn't baptized and has never gone to church. I gave him a stocking with a watch, a soccer shirt (everyone here cheers for Flamenco), and a Book of Mormon with a little note that I wrote. We also ate a lot.

 

Yesterday was Sister Petrie's birthday and I helped make a cake for her. It turned out pretty good.
