Querida família,

Last week we went to a really crappy lan-house that took forever to load everything so I couldn´t write very much. I think I have a sinus infection and last week I got a cold as well, but I am already feeling better. I have used salty water to clear my sinuses a couple of times, but I think I will start doing it more. In the Missionary Health Guide for Brazil it says to mix a half-teaspoon of salt with warm water and then snort it one nostril at a time. It is pretty gross, but it works.

This week we get to go to a wedding, I am excited because there will be lots of food and cake. The lady that is getting married is named Leila, she has been living with a member that was inactive when they met, but they have been coming to church for almost a year now and they are finally getting married. Leila has a really strong testimony and is super happy that she is finally going to be baptized. She will be a great help in this ward after she is baptized and recieves a calling. She was from a different church before, but the first time she read the Book of Mormon and prayed she felt so good that she never went back to the other church and has only missed a couple of Sundays in the last year becuase of sickness. Everyone that really wants to know the truth, has an open heart, and is humble will one day find the church and will know that it is true. The biggest obstacle is the pride that people have, they don't want to admit that they were wrong.

These past 2 weeks I have been thinking alot about charity. I am learning how to understand people better and why they are the way they are.

But, I have to go, so

See ya in 9 months

Romania, 22 Aug 2011

Hello everybody,

I have no idea what my travel plans are, they don't send them to me, they send them to you guys.  As far as I know I will be leaving sometime Tuesday morning (the 30th) from here, and that's it.  I guess if all else fails I'll call you from the airport and you can come get me.

This week was crazy.  We finally got the ward to schedule an activity for last Saturday and we took time to hand out invitations to all of the members that live in Brasov (there are a lot more that live in the surrounding small cities that we couldn't go to), but it actually turned out to be the missionaries that planned and hosted the activity.  We did the same activities that I did for the activity in Ploiesti back when I was there because everyone loved it, but here it turned out to be a disaster.
The games were all about working together to accomplish things, but nobody wanted to work together and when I would tell them what to do they would say, "why?"  Everyone except for the youth and the branch president got frustrated and angry and didn't want to participate.  I told them at the end that the activities were supposed to be for them to be united, but apparently they weren't.  Half the group got left behind in the last activity.  The branch president and the relief society president were the only ones who were super disappointed like us.  Everyone else just went home upset.  Maybe it was a humbling experience for them though, when they saw that there were obvious problems in their branch.

So, the next day, Sunday, I was supposed to speak in church and I had already planned to talk about forgiveness, so I taught them, yea, I did preach unto them.  I told the story of the 'frozen turkey' from one of President Hinckley's talks and the story of the 'cream' and then read a few places where we are commanded to forgive all men.  When I was speaking the congregation was dead silent.  I kept it pretty short.
The person who talked after me was the new relief society president, Iuliana, who is a returned missionary.  She served in England and then lived there for a while so she knows how things are supposed to go, and she gave a really good talk about healing and the atonement.  Then someone from the district presidency talked about going to the temple.  It went super well.  Then Sunday School and Relief Society went super well and in relief society the room was actually full.  So, even though the night before had been terrible, Sunday went super well.  I think things will start to get a lot better here.  People were super nice to each other and talked to us about helping the other members.  They should just havce somebody speak bluntly about forgiveness every sunday, and maybe they will always be that way.  The new relief society president gets a little stressed out about everything but she knows how to take care of everybody, so that's good.

One of the boys from a family that we're working with, Oni Nitu, came to church.  He got there and his eyes were bloodshot and he said that he had just worked the night shift and hadn't slept for 36 hours but he had promised to come to church, so he came.  It was cool, he said he really liked it too.  He said this week too that he is starting to believe that Joseph Smith is a true prophet, when before he said that was the only thing he couldn't accept about our church.  The sunday school president really liked him and had him bear his testimony about Jesus Christ during class, he did a good job too.  Him and his mom could get baptized, but his mom is sick and can't come to church until they get a car.   They are planning on getting a car, but they won't have enough money to do it for a couple more months.  (They said actually said before that if we find a girl from our church for Oni to marry they will all join, but that's probably not the best reason, we'll make sure they get testimonies).

We picked up a former investigator a few weeks ago, one of the member's moms, named Elena.  She seemed really cool, but then told us that she would be busy for the next few weeks taking care of her grandkids so we wouldn't really be able to come.  We were sad, but then we realized that the grandkids that were staying at her house were the kids of the member, and one of them is turning eight in September and is taking the lessons from the elders.  We told the elders to involve Elena in the lessons, and get her progressing as well.  Apparently she is doing awesome, and the little boy they're teaching, Raul, is super smart and good as well.  Elena said that she wants to be baptized and that she has stopped drinking coffee (which is the only thing that kept her from getting baptized a year ago).  They are just going to wait to talk to her husband.  He will probably be all for it though.  He had brain surgery a few years ago and four elders went and gave him a blessing in the hospital (because his daughter was a member) and he was healed, so he knows that it's true.  I'm sad that we didn't get to keep working with them, but it turned out to be super convenient that the elders were teaching Raul and could keep teaching them too.  They might all be baptized on the same day after Raul's birthday in September.

If I don't get the chance to email you next Monday I'll see you all next week.

Love,
Sora Jay

Querida Família,

Mom said that she was praying that we would be able to see the fruits of our labor and Ariel told a cool story so I will tell one as well.

My first transfer as senior companion I trained a new missionary and reopened an area. There weren't any investigators, we didn't know any members or the area, my companion spoke worse portuguese than I did, and we lived with the zone leaders that were going home and were really trunky and liked to sleep-in and make fun of us. The first transfer there we didn't baptize anyone, we found one 18-year-old kid that looked like he was really interested and said he wanted to be baptized, but he was murdered before he could.

The second transfer we also worked reallly hard, and I was called to be district leader, but we still didn't have very many results, we baptized one person, and when I was transfered I felt like I hadn't done much in that area, but last week the missionary that I trained was transferred here to Mossoró as well and told me that five people that I had found and taught and brought to church had been baptized after I left.

Today we had P-day with our zone and we played soccer like always. I'm getting better and attempted a bicycle (if you don't know what a bicycle is, it's when you fall backward to kick the while it is in the air). I kicked the ball, but it didn't go anywhere near the goal and it hurt because I landed on my butt.

We are teaching a family that is really cool, we already baptized the daughter because she has been going to church since January. The only problem is that the parents aren't married, but they want to get married. I have a box full of coins that I have been saving up for a couple months that I will use to help pay their wedding.

Well, gotta go already

Elder Thomas Jay

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday was the exact year and a half from when I entered the MTC, and now I get a couple more weeks.

We had the unusual opportunity this week to go on exchanges.  The APs called us just after we had gotten home and gave us our travel plans, so it was pretty much a surprise.  From Wednesday morning to Friday morning I was in Ploiesti.  Sound familiar?  I served there during December and January.

Right as I got off the train when we got there I was able to see Sora Fraser and we reminisced the days we served together in Bucuresti, and then one of the investigators that I had worked with was there at the train station and he told me that he had been baptized.  I left the station with Sora Henrickson, and my companion and Sora Fraser went back to Brasov.  We went and visited a less active family and helped them clean their one-room house a little bit because they had just painted it.  I asked Sora Henrickson about some of the less-actives that I had worked with in particular one large family Familia Banita, they hadn't ever come to church when I was there but Sora Henrickson told me that Sora Banita is now the Relief Society president.  It was awesome to hear that they were back and strong.

After that we went to go see a recent convert named Victor.  I remember my companion from Ploiesti, Sora Ausen, telling me about him.  When we walked into the crowded hallway of his bloc he screamed, "Sora Jay!" and ran over to us and hugged me.  At first I had no idea who he was.  He kept calling me his angel and telling me that I was the one who started him on his path to conversion.  Then I remembered where I knew him from, when we were teaching a lesson to Alin one time he came and sat in (there were always tons of people in those lessons), and it was actually when I was on splits with one of the member-girls there.  On the last day of the transfer we had gone to say goodbye to one of our investigators, Nastasia, and her family and we saw him standing on a street corner and I recognized him from the lesson and I gave him a Book of Mormon.
He told me he is eternally grateful for me having given him the Book of Mormon.  He credited all the other missionaries for working with him as well but told me that I started him on the path by teaching that lesson and giving him the Book of Mormon.  After that we went down to see Nastasia.  She had been baptized as well after I left.
The next day we went to see one of my former investigators, Vali.  She hadn't been baptized, but when we were talking to her she knew so much.  It's crazy to see how much she has learned since I've been gone.  She said there is nothing holding her back from joining the church except that she has to keep the orthodox burial traditions for her parents (which lasts seven years) and it will be over in February of next year so she'd rather just finish and then decide.
Then we went to the church to go on splits with some of the members to visit less-actives.  When we showed up at the church they had just finished the weekly cleaning.  There were so many people there to clean, I was amazed (especially because here in Brasov it's only the missionaries that clean the chapel).  All of them were such good members of the church that they came even on days other than Sunday, and better yet, when I was there I heard some of them discussing the needs of the people they home and visit teach.  After visiting a less active family we went and visited Alin and his family.  It was great, he's doing really well and has even learned to play the piano well, which is just what the church needed.  His family is doing way better (they were super poor before) because right after he got baptized his mom found a job and has been earning money.  Alin is going back to school in the fall, and his little brother Gabi is going to start kindergarten too.  I think they were too poor to go before.
I talked to Victor and Mihai again before I left, and then I came back to Brasov.

I think that exchange was just a chance for me to see the fruits of my labors.  My transfer in Ploiesti was hard because I felt like I was fighting against my whole district to stay obedient, and I didn't get along with my companion super well, and I had to move the apartment, and there were tons of holidays that made people not have time to meet with us.  But even with all that, God was still able to use our efforts to do some good.  And that was the result of only one transfer in one area, imagine how much more there is that I don't know about.  It was really cool to go back and see what had happened.  The branch in Ploiesti is doing super well.  They are setting the standard for the rest of Romania.  The branch president told me he is really proud of their success.
Going back and seeing them all made it really obvious how much of an impact the gospel has on people's lives.  I always tell people that, in lessons and on the streets, that their lives can be better and they can be happier because I have seen it in my own life, but now I have even better evidence.  They were all so much happier.

For me and Tom and Ed, as missionaries, it's really easy to see the difference that it makes in people's lives to have and to live the principles of the restored gospel.  When I was back at home I didn't know how much I had, either because I had never seen what it was like to not have it, or because I became complacent, or perhaps at times I didn't have the faith to act on promises or principles to experience the truthfulness of them.  Here all that I have done is try to persuade people to try it, and find out; "If any man shall do his will, he shall know of the doctrine; whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself."  And you can't persuade somebody to do something that you haven't done yourself.
I've tried it and I know it's true.  This morning I wrote down in my study journal all of the notable spiritual experiences I have had in my life, there turned out to be a lot more than I thought; you guys should try it too.

Love,
Sora Jay

PS ma enerveaza cand scrii intr-o limba pe care nu o inteleg bine, inceteaza! (glumesc)  And Victor said he's been to Sao Paolo before, because he used to do drug busts there.  I think he's some sort of detective.

Querida família,

This week we baptized a an 18-year-old girl named Edilma. She is living with member family that was sealed in the temple, but the mom was inactive because she fought with the bishop. The family was passing lots of problems and the mom and dad almost seperated, but we started teaching Edilma with the family there and the mom has come to church three Sudays in a row and everyone is a lot happier. Now that they are doing missionary work and having to show a good example everything is getting better. It is cool to see how God works, he used this family of members to help Edilma find the gospel and used the Edilma to help this family be more united and remember their own testimonies. And Elder Wright and I had the chance to be God´s instruments to get it all done. There are people everywhere that need to hear the gospel, even in Utah, we just have to open our mouth and talk with them. Maybe they never went to church or talked with the missionaries because everyone thinks someone else already talked to them.

We also started to teach the aunt and uncle of two returned missionaries, the mom and the 2 kids came to church on Sunday but the dad was playing soccer in another city. I met him on Saturday becuase during the week he works out of town. On Saturday when we taught them I asked if they wanted happier and more united family and the responded that they were already happy, so I asked them for how long they wanted to be happy and untited. They responded that they wanted to be together until the end so I aske them if their love one for another will end when one of them dies and they said no. I asked if they wanted to be together forever and they said that they wanted to so I asked if they knew how. This part was cool, the first time that this has happened on my mission, the husband looked at me and said "no, tell me." So we taught about the restoration of the gospel, the truth that our famlies can be toghether forever, and the authority necessary to do it.

On sunday we went there again and read a chapter from the Book of Mormon and said prayed with them to know if our families could be eternal, if the book was true, and if God had called a prophet. Then we read Galatians 5:22 about the fruits of the spirit and asked one at a time if they were feeling these feelings and everyone said that they were. We testified that the Holy Ghost was confirming the truth and I made an attempt to mark their baptisms for the 28th. The husband didn´t accept because he hasn´t visited the church yet, but next Sunday he'll go.

We are also teaching a lady named Celea(sell-yuh). We baptized her husband, Eliézio, a month ago, but since I have been here she had never gone to church with us because she goes to a different one. The have been taught by the missionaries for 8 months already and Celea always makes dinner for us and gives us ice cream, but it is hard to teach her because she is always in the kitchen. Friday night we made her come to the lesson and we talked about the temple and eternal families. I asked her if she believed what the missionaries had taught and she said yes, but that she hadn't felt God touch her heart so that she would leave her church and come to ours. I told her that she wouldn't feel this desire until she started to come to chruch with us, and yesterday she came to church and I got Eliézio to go up in front and share his testimony. Now we need to baptize Celea. Please pray that she will feel the desire to be baptize this month, I'm thinking of the 21st. Thanks!

Elder Jay

Hey everybody,

We just got back from a fortress in a city next to Brasov.  We thought it was going to be a castle but it was just an old fort, (made by Germans?).  I have a lot of pictures, but I think I'll be back soon enough to just show them to you then.

This week a lot of interesting things happened.  Yesterday when we were contacting in the park a guy stopped us and told us that every day for the past three days missionaries had stopped him, each from a different church, and talked to him about God.  He stopped us because the drunk guy next to him wanted a pliant.  We talked to him for a while and he told us that no one in Romania would want to listen to us, at least not the old people.  He dared Sora Bedebone to give a pliant to some girls walking past and she got up and gave one to him.  Then we gave him a pliant and told him to give it to someone, we walked around the park for a little while and found a girl for him to give it to.  As we walked around we gave other people pliants and he was super surprised that people actually took them from us.  Young people always tell us that we're going to have to wait for the generations that lived through communism to die, and then we'll have success.  It's a little sadistic, but maybe a little true.  It was an interesting experience to find someone who immediately wanted to help us proselyte.  I don't even remember what we taught him, I know that it wasn't very much.  The sad thing is that he's moving to Germany this week, so he won't get to meet with the missionaries much before he leaves.

Last night we were heading out to find some former investigators and when we were on the bus three young guys that were drunk started talking to us.  They got off the bus when we got off and one of them seemed to be talking coherently and was asking if he could meet with someone to talk about God.  He asked us a lot of questions about what we believe, etc. and said he was baptized orthodox and then baptist.  We tried to just get their numbers and leave because they were drunk, but the one who was the most there said he wouldn't give us his number unless we could ask him a question about religion that he didn't know the answer to.  We had already talked about the Plan of Salvation, so I couldn't ask him any of the questions like "what is the purpose of life," and so on, but we had just talked about the Ten Commandments so I asked him "Why do you break the commandments?"  But he had an answer and his answer was "Why not?"  So I took a second and tried to get an 'inspired question'.  I thought for a minute about what I had been thinking about recently and I asked him, "What does it mean to be humble?"
He was utterly confounded.  It was the perfect question; humility is probably one of the only things that a young guy drinking on the street with his friends and harassing some sister missionaries could not possibly claim to understand or even accurately describe (because he literally had no experience with it).  He muttered off a few possible answers but agreed that none of them were good.  He admitted, "that's a really hard question," and then he gave us his phone number so that we could help him talk to somebody about God.  As they were leaving I told them not to go do anything else stupid that night, and to go home instead, but they went anyway.

On Sunday there was a wedding at the church of two young members.  They have both been inactive for a while... because they have a baby, but maybe now that they're married they will come to church again.  The members asked us what we usually do for weddings at our church and neither of us had any idea because people usually get married at the temple, and I think I've only ever been to one wedding (one of our cousins) outside of the temple and that was a long time ago.  Anyway, the talked to some members in Italy that they knew and planned out the church part of the wedding.  They had to go get married at the city building beforehand anyway, the religious part is just for fun I guess.  So, after church ended they set up some flowers and stuff in the chapel and a few people came and they had a wedding where a member from the district presidency gave some advice about marriage and read some scriptures and from The Family Proc and then had them say some vows that they had each planned and exchange rings.  It was pretty short, and seemed really unplanned, but it was nice.  We said hi to the bride before they left, maybe we will be able to work with her.

We dropped Ifrim, the old guy investigator.  He said that for the time being he is going to choose his girlfriend over God.  And I'm pretty sure he said that actual phrase.  We already told him a billion times that he didn't have to dump her to get baptized, he just had to keep the law of chastity.  It was sad, but he wasn't ready.  I think that someday he will be.
I had a really hard time staying awake in that lesson for some reason.  Usually I never have problems during lessons.

On Saturday we were at the church cleaning (because the mission president asked the missionaries to take care of it here) and afterward we went over to McDonald's because it's close by.  When we went in there somebody yelled "Sora!"  Not very loud, because I didn't actually hear, but suddenly my companion turned and walked toward them.  It was the family of a sister missionary that had come back to visit, Sora Owen.  She had finished her mission last December and was bringing her family on a tour.  We ate our food and went back to the church (because we were supposed to prepare some songs for the wedding that they decided not to do in the end) and we let her family in.  They stayed until about eight, and a few members came to come see them.  We just contacted outside.  When they were leaving they asked how the contacting was going.  We just kind of stood there.  Then one of her brothers who had just got back from a mission in Russia said, "You're talking to a lot of people, and that's what matters."
We have been doing a lot of contacting recenlty (because we lost all of our investigators) and we haven't really been getting anything from it.  For the elders it is the same.  Everyone is getting pretty frustrated except for me.  I lived in Iasi for three transfers.  But the rest of them are younger missionaries (I think fifth transfer and down).  Plus, I guess I have something to look forward to in a few weeks, so I'm happy anyway.

Our English class failed miserably.  A ton of cool young people came to the first class, but the older ladies that always come were there and they really ruined everything.  Only two of the non-regular baba club came to the next class.  I think we're going to have to cancel it and not tell when we're starting it again to try to get the babas to stop coming.  I told Sora Bedebone we're just going to have to bother them so much about joining the church that they get annoyed and never want to come back, or just get baptized.

About three weeks ago a guy came to church, Ovidiu, because he found us on the internet and wanted to investigate our church.  He has been meeting with the elders.  Yesterday another guy came to church because he found us on the internet.  He is a young guy named Antonius, and he was watching a documentary on youtube and it mentioned Mormons (I think the documentary was about food storage because he talked about "storing seed").  He said he looked more into mormons and realized that his lifestyle is exactly the way that ours is, so he decided to come investigate the church.  I've never had that happen before in my mission, let alone twice in three weeks.  It's really cool.  I told my district we must be doing something right.  Now we just need some girls to come to church on their own so that we can teach them.

Love,
Sora Jay

P.S.  Can somebody schedule me a dentist appointment?  And prepare the dentist by telling him that I've been living in Romania for a year and a half.  I'm pretty sure I have a few cavities.

I appreciate your past effort,

Dear friend,

I'm sorry but happy to inform you about my success in getting those funds transferred under the cooperation of a new partner from London, though i tried my best to involve you in the business but God decided the whole situations. Presently I'm in London now for investment projects with my own share of the total sum. Meanwhile I didn't forget your past efforts and attempts to assist me in transferring those funds despite the fact that it failed us somehow.

Now contact my secretary in Burkina Faso his name is Sam Karim on his-mail address (replyreply000@gmail.com) Ask him to send you the total sum of ($3.5m) American dollars which i kept for your compensation for all your past efforts and attempt to assist me in this matter. I appreciated your efforts at that time very much. So feel free and get in touched with my secretary Sam Karim and instruct him where to send the fund to you. Please do let me know immediately you receive the money so that we can share the joy together after all the sufferings at that time.

In the moment, I am very busy here in London because of the investment projects which I and the new partner are having at hand, finally, remember that I have forwarded instructions to my secretary on your behalf to receive that fund, so feel free to get in touch with him. He will send the money to you without any delay ok.

Extend my greetings to your family.

Regards
Dr Pat Babar.

Batismos

Querida familia,

This week was pretty good. There was a cool story, baptisms, and transfers.

For the month of July Presidente Hall set a goal to baptize 200 people, which the mission hasn't done since he got here. Last week we had batized 138 people and we only had one week to reach the goal of 200. Presidente Hall asked for everyone to fast and sacrifice, so we did and on one week the mission baptized 79 people. There were lots of miracles this week just our zone that has 7 companionships baptized 17 people on Sunday. We baptized 3 people, Joyce, Larissa, and Anderson, I'll send some pictures later.

We had all of the baptismal interviews markd for Saturday afternoon, but Friday night we went to Joyce's house (Joyce and Larissa are next door neighbors) and she told us that Larissa was really sick with a feber and vomiting, and they were going to take her to the hospital. We went there to talk with her and her family and offered to give her a blessing. I had never felt before that should bless someone to get better right away and I thought that maybe it was becuase I don't have enough faith, but when I was going to give the blessing to Larissa I prayed to have more faith and when I put my hands on her head I felt that I should bless her to recover right away. When we came back on Saturday she was all better, passed the interview, and was baptized on Sunday. It was pretty cool.

With Anderson we needed and adult from his family to sign the baptismal form, but he lives with his grandma and great-grandma and niehter on knows how to read or write. Anderson's parents don't care about him and he doesn't even know where his mom lives, so we were had a dilema until Sunday morning we passed by his house one more time and his uncle was there to sign the form. Another miracle.

One more. With the transfers one of the other Elders in our house was called to train a new missionary and yesterday night they need a ride from the bus station to our house, which is pretty distant. I thought there were only three people in this ward that had cars and none of them could go. We were walking in the road and a car passed us and honked and then stopped so we went there and it was a sister from the ward that had a car and I didn't know, I don't even know where she lives. I told her about the transfers and she asked at what time the other missionaries would arrive and while we were talking my phone rang and the Zone Leaders told me that they had arrived in the bus station so Sister Katia went and picked them up.

Also, my first son, Elder Woolley was transfered here and is in an area right next to mine, so now my two sons have met each other. He told me that 5 people that I had found and taught in Mandacaru, my last area, were baptized after I left. It made me happy to know that the work I did there gave some fruits. I was called to be a district leader again, but this time I only have to worry about one other campanionship and they live in our house so it will be easier.

Gotta go already,

Elder Thomas H. Jay

Romania: 1 August 2011

Hello again everyone,

This week was pretty interesting.  We have lost pretty much all of our investigators recently so we have had a lot of time to contact, but we also went on a little trip to Oradea for a YSA conference.  Oradea is way out in the west but they had to bring in a lot of sisters (only 6) to handle all of the young single adults.  It was really wierd being at a YSA activity as a missionary.  I remember that missionaries used to come to our singles branch activities sometimes though.

We had to catch our first train at 10:20 on Wednesday night to get to Oradea in the morning for the conference.  We had to wait at the train station for a while because we got there early (because we had nothing else to do after 9).  We talked to some people at the train station and the group that formed around us was a bunch of young guys that were smoking and drinking.  We talked to them a little bit about the gospel and they actually seemed pretty open.  I don't think any of them live in any cities where missionaries are, but we gave them some pliants.  We should have carried Word of Wisdom pliants around with us.  One of them asked us why we were there and I told him that we came to help people have more faith.  He said, "but everyone here is already 'faithful' so why did you come here?"  I said, "Everyone here believes in God and Christ, but they don't do a very good job of putting into practice all the principles of the gospel.  You're religious and look at how you're smoking and drinking with your friends."  He agreed that they probably needed our help.  We didn't have any Word of Wisdom pliants with us but we probably should carry those things around regularly.  Anyway, we were sitting there waiting for the train and the whole time I thought that the boys' train was supposed to get there before ours but then I realized there were only a few more minutes until our train left and I showed the boys our tickets and asked them if the train was ours.  They looked at the tickets and said "Hurry!" and grabbed our stuff for us and ran us to the train.  They were nice in the end.  I felt bad for them because they weren't happy and didn't seem to want to be addicted to smoking and pressured into drinking with their friends.  Hopefully they will read the pliants and find the missionaries again someday.

The YSA activity was contacting in the park and on the streets.  We got there just a few minutes before it started (luckily we did have a sleeper train) so we didn't have time to eat any breakfast or anything like that.  We took the kids contacting, but the only problem was that they were all from different countries and the only language we all had in common was English.  They couln't help talk to very many of the people, but they drew the Plan of Salvation on the cement with chalk.  It turned out that there were only four girls there though, so there was an extra pair of missionaries. Since we were in a big group anyway I let my companion stay with one of the girls and I mostly contacted people on my own and brought them over to the Plan of Salvation drawing to tell them about it.  There was one girl there from Hungary and she came up and said, "I speak Hungarian but not Romanian" and I told her that we were super close to the border so there should be tons of people that she could talk to.  She said "How do I know if they speak Hungarian" and I said "Say hi to them and see if they respond."  It was cute that she had no idea what to do.  I walked around with her for a while contacting, but I couldn't help with any of the people that spoke Hungarian and she couldn't help with any of the people that spoke Romanian.  The youth at the activity seemed to have really good missionary skills.  One kid from Romania talked to a girl with me and he was super good at asking her questions that made her be interested.  I wish I could speak Romanian as good as he could, it was way easier for him to get her to listen and explain things to her.
There were some boys from Poland that were really flirty, which I guess is appropriate for a YSA activity, just not with the sister missionaries.  I asked them if Poland was like Romania and they gave me a disgusted look.  So, I guess not.  One of them kissed my hand before he left (which isn't completely abnormal here) and he definitely had a different and more polite style than the Romanian style of hand-kissing.  I wonder what it's like in the other countries around here.

After that we caught a train back to Brasov at about 4 o'clock.  We got on the train and it was mostly empty so we were able to sprawl out on the chairs and sleep some more.  But, the more and more cities we went through, the more people got on.  Just then, a cute little family with three kids came and their tickets were for the chairs right next to ours.  The rest of the people in the train were starting to get drunk and go crazy.  There were a bunch of guys singing songs really loud and walking up and down the train with their shirts off, and there were a couple of girls that were completely wasted wandering around behind them.  I'm glad that the little family was sitting next to us so that they didn't have to be next to a bunch of crazy drunk people.  Their kids started going to sleep pretty fast so we didn't talk to them a lot until they were mostly asleep.  We got off our train at about 2:30 am and pretty much all that I was able to say to the little family was that we had a really special book that we wanted to give to them, and I handed them a Book of Mormon.  They were pretty religious people and the mom seemed really flattered and she said "but, do you still have some if you just give this away to me?"  I told her we had a few more.  They don't live in a city where the church is either, but maybe they will someday too.

We have been pretty exhausted this week because of the two nights on the train, but we just did a lot more contacting.  Last night we were knocking some blocks and people there were super nice to us.  It was the first time in a while that I have knocked on somebody's door and offered to explain to them some things and we got let in.  There was a nice guy that we told about the Book of Mormon.  All he accepted was a Restoration pliant though.  After knocking those blocks we went to some more next door, but the people there weren't very nice.  The block had been knocked by JWs before and nobody wanted to even look at us.  One guy opened the door and said "No," before we had said anything and I laughed and said "At least take a pliant."  So he did and said "You're Witnesses right?" and we said "No."  And he said "Oh" and suddenly looked at the pliant with much greater interest.  He just hated JWs but not us.  I wonder what they do to make people hate them so much.  Usually when we leave a bloc people have good feelings toward us.  One of the people in the first bloc was an orthodox priest and he said that we shouldn't be doing what we were doing and said that people need to love each other and not try to convert each other.  I told him that we were there trying to help people out of love for them, and pointed out that they actually did need help.  He seemed impressed, and told us to come back and talk to him sometime when he didn't have guests over.  In the last bloc we went to a little old lady tried to kick us out, but she was a little old lady.  We did start to leave but we were putting pass-along cards in everyone's mail boxes before going and she ran and got somebody to kick us out.  The lady that came out backed us up though; she said, "Look, they're just putting some coupons in the mailboxes."
"But, they were knocking on people's doors before," said the baba.
"They were just giving away coupons and pliants," said the younger lady, and she didn't kick us out.  I apologized to the baba for bothering her and she said that we scared little old ladies like her by coming into the blocs and knocking them.  The younger lady said she had talked to missionaries from our church before and knew that they are good people.  It was interesting.

Well, this letter is already super long, so you guys can read it.

Love,
Sora Jay

P.S. I think I used the word pliant a lot, but I don't want to go back and correct it, it means pamphlet.
