Sousa
Querida família,
This week went well, but this branch is a litte difficult. Yesterday 37 people went to church and everyone said that the attendance at church has been dropping every week and that the branch will be closed. The members are depressed so we need get them excited and lift their spirits. This should be the best branch in the district because it was the first, the zone leaders work here, and the district president lives here, but right now it is the worst branch in the district. We talked with the District President yesterday and he showed that in our branch 3% of the members were visited this trimester. I think that I might stay here until the end of my mission and I want to see the chapel full before I leave.
They had a big "March for Jesus" for three days in the center of the city this week and one night we had to walk past to go home. A group of youngmen called us over and wanted to argue with us. I get so mad when people start talking crap about the church and the Book of Mormon. I think it is one of the only things that gets me mad, because the people have no ideia what they are talking about. They never went to church, never talked to the missionaries, never read the Book of Mormon and just regurgitate a couple of scriptures from the Bible that they heard from their pastor and don't understand. But, I didn't fight, I walked away, and when I got home put my matress against the wall and beat the crap out of it.
We brought a man named Paulo to church yesterday who is 26 or 27 and is about to finish his masters in Geography. I like teaching people that are inteligent and study. The church meetings were really disorganized and the teachers aren't very exerienced, but I was still able to feel the Spirit and I think he did too. We went to his house Sunday morning to take him to church and his aunt said he had left already. He went to church half an hour early and got there before most of the members.
Tomorrow will be our Christmas conference with some other zones. Elder Walton and I are in charge of the games and President Hall is going to let play wii. I hope they have Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart so I can destroy everyone.
They are doing three seperate Christmas Conferences this year so that the missionaries don't have to travel as long and every district has to make a dessert. They did the conference in Nata already and almost all of the missionaries got food poisoning and threw up afterward. Can't trust food made by Elders.

It has only been a couple of days since the last time I wrote, but a couple of cool things have happened. We are teaching a deaf man that has already gone to church a couple times and his baptism is marked for the 18th. The only problem is that we don't know sign language. He doesn't even know sign language that well. We have been teaching him using pictures and paintings and some signs that we have learned, he also has a friend that speaks a little bit of sign language. On friday we taught the Word of Wisdom and the Law of Chastity. It was a little difficult, but it was really funny. Try teaching the Law of Chastity only using signs and paintings from the church.
On Saturday we went to the new group that opened in Pau dos Ferros. It isn't actually in the city, it is in a little town a couple of miles away where only five hundred people live. We passed all of Saturday teaching there and stayed the night. I took some pictures of the house where we slept, it is actually a meat locker and no one lives there. There were nooses hanging from the cieling where the hang the animals, but they would work to hang people as well. There were freezers full of dead animals, a table saw to chop up the animals, and a couple of giant knives. It was all dirty and creepy so we slept in hammocks in front of the house, it was the first time I slept outside during my mission and it was actually pretty cool, except that there were dogs barking all night. We got up about five Sunday morning and some guys arrived with a giant dead pig and hung it up in the house while we took showers and got ready to leave. I took some pictures.
Sunday we had a region conference for the northeast of Brazil. So everyone went to the chapel in Souza where we have satelite. They rented a mini-bus to take everyone from Pau dos Ferros to Sousa so we rode in the bus with the members and some investigators. We got in Sousa, ran to our apartment, changed clothes, shaved and went back to church to watch the conference. Elder Cook and President Eyering spoke and they talked a lot about pride. It was really good. Afterward the sisters had a baptism and our investigators from Pau dos Ferros got to watch it. Right now there are only 8 members in Pau dos Ferros, but I think I will stay here for a while, and I want to see a branch there.
Now it is P-day, and I want to sleep...

Transfer again
Querida família,
I was transferred again after only three weeks in santarém. Now I am a zone leader in a city called Sousa. Our zone is three cities, sousa, Pombal, and Cajazeiras. Also we are opening a group in a city called Pau dos Ferros, when we baptize there we are going to do it in a pond. It's going to be super cool! We are going to be the first missionaries in this city and we are going to bring everyone to church. Sousa is really hot, just as hot as Mossoró.
On monday I got to go to the zone leader coucil, it was pretty cool. We ate really good food in a chinese restaurant and we had açai. They also sang a song to all the new zone leaders that goes like this but in portugues: Elder Jay, who doesn't want Elder Jay, we need a baptizer, a faithful friend just like you and me Elder Jay! It was really funny.
Here in Sousa there is a couple missionary that got her 3 weeks ago, they are going to help alot in the local leadership. Also I think I will be able to use skype in their house to talk with you on Christmas.

This week passed by really fast, and not much happened. Saturday we had a talent show in the church but before the show the young men and women sold soup and tapioca to raise money for the campout that they always do during Carnival. The talent show was pretty funny. There is a permagater here that is crazy and for his talent he recited a poem that he wrote. Afterward Elder Shelton beat-boxed while the crazy rapped about Americans. Everyone was laughing.
Thursday we had a special training with President Hall and when we were returning to our area the bishop called us and told us to pass in his house before lunch. We went there and he told us that a girl in the ward had a devil. I have met two people that have problems with "devils" and both of them have epilepsy as well. When a person has a severe siezure is it possible that they start to talk and act like they are a different person or that there is an evil spirit in them? They ended up taking her to the hospital because nothing they did made her get better. We called President Hall because the members were doing a lot of wierd, apostate things and yelling, and he told us that he didn't want us to stay there so we left. It was a pretty wierd experience.
We talked to a 20-year-old member girl who has been missing church alot. Her younger sisters are member and she was really active when she was younger. We talked to her about going on a mission and she cried. I like it when people cry while we teach. When the members here don't have some goal to reach they always stop going to church. All of us need to have goals to keep us working.

Emergency Transfer
Querida família,
There was an emergency transfer and several Elders were switched, including me. Now I am in Natal in an area called Santarém. I really wanted to stay in Bom Jardim until the end of the transfer because we had a lot of people to baptize, but it isn't important who baptizes them, they just need to be baptized.
The Elder that was transferred from here also left a baptism, an 18-year-old named Junior. He felt the Spirit very strongly during his baptism and confirmation. Now we have to send him on a mission.
Unfortunatley we don´t have a lot of people in our group of investigators and we only had two investigators at church yesterday. I don't like doing street contacts, but we are going to have to do a lot until we get some good referrals from the members. Most of the time I invite people to be baptized in the first contact to find the "elects".
My new companion is Elder Shelton. He is from Southern California and is finishing his second transfer in the mission field. He has 4 brothers and 3 sisters and he sings really well so in our lessons we always sing. Before my mission I never would have sung for strangers the first time that I met them, but it invites the Spirit really well.
We taught a woman this week who is a referral from a family in our ward. The first time we talked with her we sang a hymn and I asked if she had a question. She said no, but then I said something that answered the question that she had in her head and she started to cry. the second lesson the same thing happened. It is really cool when the Holy ghost leads your lessons.

I think today was the all-time low in e-mails recieved, but I know that you are all busy preparing for Jesh's wedding and Thanksgiving and everything. This week we baptized a young-man named Vitor. He already has friends that are members and he goes to seminary everyday. We are also teaching his mom and his two younger siblings, they were almost baptized yesterday, but need a little more preperation.
Yesterday during sacrament meeting I was sitting next to a 28-year-old investigator named Paulo, I gave him a tie so we went to church with a white shirt and tie for the first time. During one of the hymns he asked if there was going to be a baptism, I told him there would. Then, he looked at me and said, "I'm going to be baptized too. Do you already have a baptism marked next week?"Before we started teaching him he was involved with drugs and alcohol. We met him a little more than two months ago when we started teaching his mom and uncle and they have been going to church every week. Ever since we started teaching him he has stopped using everything and he and his uncle haven´t been drinking. The only problem is that he has still been smoking a couple of cigarettes, but he won't smoke anymore. Last night we talked with him, his mom, and his uncle and he told us that he is feeling really good. That before he felt sad all the time and now he is happy, and whenever he is tempted to do something wrong he reads the Book of Mormon and the temptation passes. It is really gratifying to see people's lives change and know that you were an instrument in God's hands to bring about that change.
One of our recent-converts, Eliézio, is the seceretary of the Elders Quorom and will teach his first class next Sunday. He has already read the True to the Faith, Gospel Principles, and is finishing 2nd Nephi in the Book of Mormon. His wife still isn't baptized, but she is getting closer. They are a really good couple and always give us food whenever we visit them. I wouldn't be suprised if Eliézio is the bishop of a new ward here in a couple years.

This week was really good. We focuse a lot on working with members and we had members with us in the maiority of our lessons. We also held a missionary fireside where all the missionaries talked. We talked about recent-converts, inactive members, referrals and goals. We set some goals with the leaders to increase the attendance in their organizations by bringing back inactive members and giving us referrals. We are going to start passing a stocking around during the classes in church so the people can put referrals in it.
We didn't baptize anyone this week, but we have the baptism of a mom and her three kids marked for this Sunday. We are also teaching two men Mario and Paulo. We have been teaching them for a while and they have been going to church and I believe they will be baptized shortly.
A couple of days ago I started talking to a guy that was sitting in front of his house and I asked him what he does to show that he loves God. His answer was great. "I work as a brick layer... buildin' houses." Then we talked a little more and invited him to be baptized, he accepted, but didn't go to church. Normally, we invite people to be baptized the first time we talk with them so that they know whey we are there. They need to know that our visits and the things we teach have a purpose. No one can be saved in the kingdom of God without being baptized by the power of the priesthood and in our area we are the only ones that can invite a person to be baptized, if we don't invite them no one else can.
Good news, I already got the Christmas package that Joni and Aaron sent. Last time I got it in February and this time I got it in November. Joni told me not to share, but I couldn't help it and shared it with the other missionaries, just not all of it. I liked the ties, I wanted to be able to give them to the people I baptize and the members, but you sent me some super cool ties so I will have to give away my old ones. I think the coolest one is the tie with all the little Captain Moronis.

Deportation

We baptized a girl named Gerliana this week She has been going to church with a member family for a couple of months and her first question for us was "when am I going to be baptized?" I was an illeagal immigrant from Setember until Friday. It is a good thing the police didn't catch me or I would have been deportIed.
The church sends a letter to the mission when it is time to renew the visa, but the mail workers here went on strike for a month so the letter got there late. We had transfers on Wednesday and Thursday was my first day with my new companion. What I didn't know was that the APs were trying to call me the all day long, but my cell phone was malfunctioning. When I got home I plugged in the cell phone to recharge and saw that it wasn't working so I messed with it a little then went to bed, but during my prayer the cell phone rang and one of the APs asked if I could get to the bus stop before 11 o´clock, it was already ten-thirty but we all got dressed real fast and payed a guy to take us to the bus station.
I made it to the bus station on time and went from Mossoró to Campina Grande overnight and from Campina Grande to João Pessoa in the moring. I travelled with another Elder that was going to train a new missionary so I wasn´t alone. President Hall picked us up in the bus station at 10 in the morning and took us to the Federal Police station where I renewed my visa then ate lunch with President and Sister Hall and at 4 o´clock got on a bus from João Pessoa to Campina Grande. I got on a bus from Campina to Mossoró at 7 thirty and got to my house in Mossoró at 5 in the morning. I scared the other Elders because they didn't know I was coming yet and I had keys to the house. It was pretty funny. Then I slept for an hour until 6 thirty and was really tired all day because I hardly slept.

Sorry I didn't write last week, the computer was having problems. So now I have 19 nephews and the twentieth will be born in May, maybe he will be born on my birthday.
Yesteryday we had transfers. I stayedy here in Bom Jardim and Elder Wright went to João Pessoa. My new companion is Elder Teschell, he is from Paraná in the south of Brasil and everyone thinks he is an american becuase he is white, has reddish-blonde hair, and doesn't have brown eyes. After 7 and-a-half months training new americans I will be able to get better in portuguese.
On sunday we baptized Karol. She is Alvanir's youngest daugther, now Alvanir and three of her daughters are members, we just need to baptize the dad, Antônio, and the oldest daugther who is already married (toghether really, the people don't get married, they just live together).
We went to a birthday party Saturday night. It was the 15th birthday of a girl that Eliézio and Celia raised so they had the Party in their house. The girl lives in Seara, where Tim was a missionary and she came down with her mom and brother and some friends. When we went to the party everyone wanted to give us food, wait on us, talk with us, and take pictures with us. It was a little annoying, but now I know how celebrities feel. We invited them to church on Sunday and they all liked it alot and said that if they lived here they would leave their church and be baptized in ours. They live in a city where they church doesn't exist yet so they can't go where they live. What a shame.

Was Re-pete born yet? Last week you said he was due any day. I like to tell people how many brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews I have even though the most common response is, "Do you have TV up there?"
This week we baptized two people, Alvanir and Pablo. Alvanir has two daughters that are members and the cousins of Pablo's cousin are members. Yesterday I left the baptismal font filling up during Sacrament Meeting it seems like it takes about an hour to fill up, but yesterday for some reason it filled up faster, and when I went of there the bathrooms were flooded and the font was still filling up. I pulled off shoes and rolled up my pantlegs real fast, then turned of the water and used some buckets to take out the water. Unfortunately a bunch of little kids saw this and decided that they wanted to watch the baptism. Lots of the little kids here are like wild animals, they can't stay in there seats or be quiet. After the baptism I found a couple of them drinking water from the baptismal font. Anyway, The baptism went well aside from this and Alvanir cried a lot afterward. I feel really happy when people cry during baptisms and lessons.
Also, I caught a lizard this week. They are really fast and hard to catch without crushing them, but I finally succeeded yesterday, and then the lizard did number two in my hand because he was so scared.
Not much more happened this week, so I'll get going.

Sorry that I didn't write last week, well I wrote a little, but the time ran out and the my e-mail was lost.
We had another mouse in our house that we had to get rid of. He was hiding in the kitchen and we were trying to find him when he came running out from under the stove. I had the broom in my hand and was the first to react. This time it was a little gory, I'll just leave it at that.
General Conference was really good, I got to watch all of the sessions this time, It helped me get more excited and made me want to be better. Presidente Eyering told a story where Spencer W. Kimball called and woke up his younger brother to go and examine some chapels with him, then told a story where President Hinckley called and woke him up to revise some papers. During a mission you get pretty tired, but we have to continually ask ourselves what more can I do?
As far as investigators go, these past two weeks have been a little more difficult. It isn't really hard to find people to talk to, but most of them aren't willing to do anyting. In order for a person to converted the have to do three things: Read the Book of Mormon, Pray about it, and go to church. If they do that with a sincere heart the Holy Ghost will testify to them of the truth.
Toda as I was studying the Book of Mormon, the thought came to my mind, there is no way Joseph Smith or any other man was smart enough to write this book and I felt once more the Holy Ghost testifying to me that The Book of Mormon is true. That is why I know that Jesus Chrsit is the son of God and our savior and that he guides his true church through Prophets and Apostles. That is what motivates me to do what is right and to preach the Gospel.
