Querida Familia,

Mom keeps on writing how cute Jenson is, but I haven't seen a picture of him yet. Will you commit to sending me a picture of Jenson? I can promise you that when you do I will put it in my scrap book. Some pictures of mountains and snow would be cool too, and the kitchen when it is done. It will be a lot easier now then when I am in Brazil.

I am in a new area now, called Annaville, but I still live in the same apartment. My new companion is a District Leader named Elder Driesel. We focused a lot on finding this week because there weren't many investigators in Annaville. We didn't have any super cool experiences this week, but there was one that was kind of good.

Elder Driesel and I were walking down a street to visit some less-actives and we saw a lady sitting in her garage but right when we looked at her she got up and ran inside so we kept walking. The family we were going to visit wasn't home so we talked to a couple people around there and started walking back. We saw the same lady sitting outside, but we just kept on walking because we thought she would run away. As we were walking away I felt like we needed to talk to her. I took a couple more steps, sighed, then told Elder Driesel we needed to talk to her. So we turned around and she started to run inside, so we a yelled at her and said we wanted to give her something. We ended up having a super good lesson with her, and she is now our newest investigator. That was the strongest I have ever felt prompted I needed to talk to someone, and I'm glad I did.

Chao vatos,

Elder Jayote

27 Sept 2010

Hello again everybody,

At the beginning of this week we had Zone Conference which included going to a castle a little ways outside of  Bucharest with half the mission.  I took a lot of cool pictures but my camera won't hook up to this computer so I'll have to see if I can send them on another missionary's computer before I leave.  We went in a bus and we watched 'The Errand of Angels' and 'The Testaments'.  The first movie was pretty lame, and it wasn't spirutual either, it was just pretty much sister-missionary drama.  Every single missionary was disappointed when they got let into a bloc and then the people said they only believed in the Bible so the sisters left.  It was the dumbest ever; a real missionary would have just testified and explained, and then leave when they started hitting you with something or when they grabbed your companion and flung her out the door.  Most of us slept through 'The Testaments' though.  That's what happens when you give missionaries a little break, they just try to catch up on all of the sleep they haven't been getting for the past few months.

At Zone Conference we did a bunch of role-plays.  At the 'beginning-teaching' practices my companion and I got to give a demonstration at the end.  I told the investigator that he had to actually do something if he wanted to change his life; afterward the missionaries were all impressed with how bold I was.  I say that to people in Romanian all the time though and it doesn't seem to effect them that way.  They just agree, "logic."
We had some bloc-knocking role-plays too and we did those in Romanian.  Whenever you go into someone's house here you take your shoes off so one of the tactics of getting into somebody's house was starting to take your shoes off.  My companion did a practice with this tactic but she used the wrong verb; she wanted to say "hai sa ne descultsam" (we can take our shoes off) but she accidentally said "hai sa ne distram" which means "Let's have some fun," which kind of has some implications.  I started laughing really hard, I was even crying because I was laughing so hard.  I guess it doesn't sound that funny written here, but if you knew what comments we got from people in the blocs it makes it a lot better.  I told her that the person probably would have let us in and that we should use that tactic more often.

Last night we were knocking the doors in our bloc because we're moving so we had an excuse to try to talk to them (to say goodbye) and then we asked if we could share a message with them.  People were super nice to us in our own bloc.  One lady let us in and offered us some grape juice.  I asked her if there was any alcohol in it and she said that there wasn't.  She gave us some fizzy grape juice and we drank it and she gave us more.  I asked her if she had carbonated it, and she said she hadn't done anything to it, 'it was totally natural.'  So, for there to be bubbles in it, it obviously was at least a little fermented (or at least there was some microbial activity in there).  I guess we couldn't hide it on our faces after we heard that because she said "I'm not trying to kill you or anything.  Even I drank some."  And so maybe we broke the word of wisdom last night.

This week we had a pass-off lesson with the elders with a guy that Sora Wilson had met in the parc while on exchanges; we had switched companions during sisters training.  So we taught a lesson with the elders.  Pretty much just me and the senior companion from the elders taught the lesson.  It was really nice and a really cool lesson, really powerful too.  With both of us being experienced we were able to toss off to each other and work together.  It's been a long time since I've had a lesson like that.  For the past two-and-a-half transfers I have been the more dominant companion and I kind of have to prompt my companion to speak sometimes.  Usually the reason that I would give for giving people to the elders was that they spoke Romanian better than me, but I don't think I can use that anymore.

Okay, I've decided that I'm going to write some letters and send them in the mail, but I'm going to start by sending them to the grandkids, because I figure that they are the ones who know the least about me because they don't have how to read the emails that I send, probably.  I'll probably just write to them starting from the oldest ones and down, so if nobody gets any letters I hope you let me know because I might be adressing them wrong.

Love,
Sora Jay

Romania 20 Sept 2010

Hey everyone,

Today I was looking at some American dollars and they seemed wierd-looking and really long and skinny.  I remember when I first got here and everything was really wierd and small and dirty; but now I'm used to it.  I also think that skinny pants aren't as ugly as I used to think they were, probably because everybody wears them here.

It's cool that you had so many people at church Tom.  We invite and call and remind tons of people each week, and for the past few we have had none.  Even our investigators that had baptismal dates haven't been coming.  But, it just means that it's time to find new investigators then.  We've met some really cool people in the park this week with all the extra time that we've had not teaching the investigators that we dropped or that disappeared.

I keep forgetting every week to bring my miracles journal so that I can write a couple of them for you guys to read.  I have too short of a memory span to remember them because I have to remember so many things to do every day that I have to let other things go.  We got kicked out of a bloc yesterday though.  This one guy came out of his door so that he could leave to go to work and started questioning us and then told us to get out of the bloc, we went out and opened the door to the elevator and told us to get inside.  We got inside and I pushed one of the buttons and we went up a floor.  He ran up the stairs and told us to get back into the lift and get out of the building and said that he would call the police; but we are allowed to be in the blocs anyway so the police couldn't have done anything to us as long as we had our passports with us.  Sora Wilson wanted to argue with the guy but she didn't know Romanian well enough to, and I would rather just come back later than have him hit us or anything so we left the bloc.  The guys outside who had let us in got mad at the guy who kicked us out, so that was cool.
We also knocked on the door of an Orthodox priest yesterday.  I always think of the priests as being super corrupted and evil because of the things that they teach people here, but we knocked on the door of this humble priest who didn't live in a giant mansion and he said that he would like to know what we had to say.  He didn't give us very much time to tell him our message but we were able to give him a Book of Mormon and he said that he would read it.  We told him to come to church.

Tom, I just realized that my companion was in the MTC at the same time as you.  Did you ever meet her?  Her name is Sora Wilson and she is from Australia.  Ed should go say hi to the Romanian district too, because I will probably definitely meet the sister in there and the elders might be in my districts or zones at some point.

Well, I guess I'll just send you some of the pictures that I haven't sent to you yet.

Love,
Sora Jay

P.S.  On P-day I looked at a little bit of Russian and learned the cyrillic alphabet.  I forgot what it was like learning at the beginning.  I have a lot more sympathy for my companion now.

Romania 13 Sept 2010

Hey Everybody,

That's cool that you had a big Utah conference on Sunday.  It's weird to think about how different the church is in Utah compared to the rest of the world.  Even my companion from Australia said that the church is different in Utah from the way it is in Australia.  Everything just functions the way that it is supposed to all by itself.  It probably comes from the pioneer heritage that the area in Utah has.  I actually planned a lesson for this evening about William Geddes to share with some recent converts, so that they can learn to have faith like his.  Not that they don't already, because they are the pioneers in this country.

That's interesting how they talked about our time being harder than it was for the pioneers (especially because you guys are in Utah).  But I have been thinking about that recently too.  The song "I'll go where you want me to go" used to be one of my favorites, but now I don't really like all of the lyrics, especially where it says "it may not be at the battle's front, the Lord will have need of me," because there is nobody in this world who is a member of this church that is not at the front of the battle.  And the missionaries are straight-out in enemy territory.

Anyway, this past week we had a 'sister's training' because we don't have the opportunity of going on exchanges with the missionary leaders to learn what they learned from the training.  It was kind of things that we already do, just a little more emphasis on a couple of things that we weren't really good at (that we realized that we weren't good at once we started working on them) like introducing teaching using the techniques in Preach My Gospel, and waiting to be inspired before speaking.  It's hard to do with romanians because if you pause they usually just keep talking, so we pretty much have to be inspired on the spot.  It's cool how it works out.  There have been a few times in my mission where people were really impressed by the things that I was able to say to them and told us that we were really well trained/studied or really clever; they have no idea that we're just a couple of girls thrown in a foreign country and struggling to learn the language just so that we can communicate the lessons to them, and it is only through the Holy Ghost that we could ever know how to say something to them that would effect them like that.  Last night we were talking to a guy on a bench in the park and nothing that we were saying was getting into his head.  He was rambling on about saints, and then the question just suddenly came out of my mouth, "Why don't you become a saint?"  He actually went silent and then tried to explain that not everybody can be a saint.  "Why?"  I asked him.  He didn't have an answer.  "Maybe they don't know how," I said.  He agreed and said that he also didn't know how to become a saint.  I held the Book of Mormon out to him and said "Read."
It's cool how our church believes in every member being a 'saint.'  It's also cool that the name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of the Saints in the Last Days, in Romanian, because there are a lot of times when we talk to people and they agree that we are living in the last days (everyone's favorite book in the bible here is Apocalipsa=Revelations) and then we show them the name that is written on our badges and it uses the exact same words that they just used to tell us that we are in the Last Days.

Last week we ate dinner at one of our investigators houses and she gave us some yummy cake so I asked her what it was made out of, she told us how she made the mousse and used the word cappucino.  I had already finished my cake and Sora Wilson was about halfway through hers.  We decided that we need to bring up the Word of Wisdom really soon.  We committed her to be baptized at the end of our last lesson, so she'll get it.

My companions done now, so I'll talk to you guys later.

Love,
Sora Jay

Say congratulations to Katie Breckenridge for me.

Romania 6 Septembrie 2010

Hey everybody,

Sounds eventful at home.  I have some comments that I want to make on your emails.

Ed, when I was in the MTC I never stressed about the language either.  I think mostly because I knew that it was something that needed to happen for me to be a missionary in Romania, so I just had faith that if I studied with the time that I was given I would learn it.  Maybe you can tell that to your district.  People in our family do have a special gift with languages though, which is why every person in our family who went on a mission has spoken a foreign language.  My companion asks me language questions all the time and today she said, "How do you know all these things?" and I just said I can remember really well when I hear things, but I don't speak perfectly.  At this point I have been trying to open up my vocabulary to a whole new range of communication and I can sypathize a lot more with my companion, because I can't say the things that I really want to say.  I learn something new every day.  (And I have a six-pack too, because I do like a hundred sit ups and a hundred crunches every morning).
There are no cities in this mission that use bikes as normal trasportation, although it seems like it would be a good idea in some places.  There is usually pretty good public transportation, so we get passes and use them.  Here in Bucharest I have an 'abonament' so that I can use any bus, tramvai, or metrou.
One of the members that was at the temple dedication told us about her experience when we were teaching her daughter at her house.  She said that the group of romanians was in a side room so that they didn't get to shake President Monson's hand or anything, so they were really sad, but as he was walking away one of the members yelled "I love you!  Romania!"  And he turned and went over to where they were.  She said that he hugged them and blessed them, and he told them that he would visit Romania.  I thought it was cool.  I've never heard of a modern prophet stopping and giving people blessings like that before, but I guess that is what should be normal for a servant of Christ.
PMG stands for Preach My Gospel, Mom.  We called it PEG in the MTC because we had it in Romanian.
If Ed denies having had shingles, maybe he didn't have them and maybe you were thinking of me.  I had shingles twice.

It's easy to forgive the people here for the crazy things that they do, because the real blame is the corrupt teachings of the Orthodox church.  One time this lady grabbed my arm when we were getting in a MaxiTaxi (a van thing) and my companion had already gotten on so I needed to hurry before it took off.  The lady held on tight to my arm and told me to leave my church and go to the 'true' church which was orthodoxy.  I ripped my arm out of her hand and yelled "Never!" (niciodata) and ran and jumped in the MaxiTaxi.  It was awesome, my companion was super pleased.  Some people go crazy and start yelling things at you, mostly old ladies because they are the only ones who are actually active in the orthodox church, the best response (besides just walking away, I guess) is to just start saying things to them in English then they get bewildered and stop.  Luckily I've never encountered a old lady who was devout orthodox who also spoke English.

I have an evil thing that I have done to every one of my companions.  I open bags of treats and eat one or two and then leave the bag there open, and so far every one of my companions has been the type of person that finishes off the bag.  So I do it for entertainment, and I think that each of my companions has gained weight, except for Sora Hupp because we were on our feet all day long every day, so she actually lost weight.
You have to entertain yourself somehow.

My companion was really upset after church yesterday because none of our investigators showed up.  I don't remember what it was like for me at the beginning, but you can't just stop or anything.  I felt really bad for my companion.  I ended up teaching most of the lessons myself because she was sad, but after a couple of lessons she felt a lot better.  That's the great thing about missionary work, you get energized from actually doing it.  Whenever we feel really tired we just go contacting and then we get energy back, even when people don't listen to us.

Next time I'll bring my miracle journal to email and tell you one of the stories.

Love,
Sora Jay
